SACD

i need help with my cd player i got an SACD and it won't play

I think that you need a specially equipped CD player to play SACD's unfortunately, so you may have to return it.

WarWagon 03-08-2004 11:42 AM

This is correct. SACD is an entirely different format, and requires an SACD capable player. SACD players however, are capable of playing standard CD's.

There are some dual-format CD/SACD's out there; I have The Police (Every Breath You Take:The Classics) which works just fine in a regular CD player. However, the description specifically said "This Super Audio Compact Disc (SACD) recording offers high-resolution sound and is playable on both standard CD players and SACD-compatible devices."

jujueye 03-08-2004 02:17 PM

Well, you're all correct.

Check the label of what you bought. It will tell you both what you have, and where it can be played.

By the way....which disc is it?

WarWagon 03-08-2004 02:30 PM

Have you tried playing it on a different CD player? I've encountered a few CD players that had difficulty reading dual format discs.

I believe in addition to the SACD player, you'll also need a receiver capable of handling the input from the player...plus full-range surround sound speakers.

Nope! Currently the only output from an SACD player is analog, so just use the normal CD player (or any other) input on a receiver. No digital is allowed to be transmitted from any player right now. This is part of Sony's scheme to shut down ripping. In the future, there may be some DACs available, which I think will use FireWire as a transmission type due to its rather secure data transfer scheme.

Well, I don't own a SACD player, but I assume that if it doesn't have a digital out, then the player must do the decoding itself. In that case there must be an analog out for each channel on the back of the player, meaning you'll need a receiver that has all of the analog inputs...not just stereo.

Exactly! All decoding is going on inside the box. The outputs are only analog outputs from this type of player, which is the same thing that comes out of just about all components. Hook up accordingly!

Hey guys, new to the group.

SACD and DVD-A is a format war that has been brewing for quite some time now. Great stuff. I am blessed to have a universal player that plays both at their full bandwidth multichannel potential.

Here goes. Hyrbid SACD do come with a stereo track that plays in most standard DVD/CD players. To get the full potential you will need a player / reciever combo. As far as cabling goes, right now you have to use the analogs (RF,LF,C,LR,RR,LFE) back to the reciever where it converts the signal back to digital. This is going to change.

Now, DVD-A recently pushes ahead in this format war. Since everyone is in tune with the term "DVD" all of their new disc are going to be shipped in a "flipped" mode. Where on one side you have the multichannel high res layer, the other side has the stereo track. The DVD-A's will probably push ahead and win this war......

I think the reason the DVDA group is doing this is in response to a similar feature already being available on SACD. That is, two versions of the recording on one disc. It will certainly be an effective tool for them, but I continue to read about the DVD-A group being less than organized, and less than agreeable when it comes to making good business decisions. You are very smart indeed to have a universal player, because I don't think the end will be any time soon.

Again, welcome to you, who have come to Zombocom...no wait...TFP!

I don't own a DVD-A or SACD player, but I don't think the reciever is converting the signal back to digital. If the decoding is happening in the player itself, then it's analog from there to your speakers.

iamtheone 03-23-2004 04:17 AM

Well, in both cases I think they offered a stereo track or DD 5. 1 that is playable on most dvd players. Me personally, I can't really decide which I like better. Right now, the selection is better on DVD-A, where I feel that the quaility goes to SACD.

Yes, that is correct. The player will decode the signal then send this to the reciever via the analog connections. Sorry if I was vauge on that.....Some newer setups offer a connection using firewire/iLink which will allow you to do away with all those cables.

My thoughts exactly. Although, Universal is beginning to sell more SACDs, including items that were only previously released on DVD-A. Steely Dan, for instance. I like this as I jumped on the SACD bandwagon already.
