<a name="dolphin">Project Dolphin - Join the TFP Typing team!!

Okay, this is just for fun. No requirements on your part. This is just a way to see how much we are typing as a collective. No prizes, no awards, some recognition ;)

THE PROGRAM - It is Project Dolphin. A small program lives on your computer and counts how many times your fingers push the keys of your keyboard. It does not log what keys you press. It only counts that a key was pressed. Any key. So relax, no spying going on here.

WHERE - http://www.project-dolphin.nl

WHY - Because we are fun people who are always happy to have some cheap way of seeing who types the most, thats why. :)

Here is the TFP Team join link - http://www.project-dolphin.nl/member...n.php?tid=1318

The site may be a bit confusing, but feel free to post questions here. I'll try to answer as much as I can figure out.

------

windows only so far, sorry mac and linux users :(

Not really an expert on it, but that's what I've been led to believe it it. The SETI@home network is run a university that sponsers it. What people do is download the main program, and install it, and you can have it run all the time, or have it run when you aren't using the computer, using the spare computing cycles for something effective. What the SETI team hopes is that if lots and lots of people do this, they can break down all the work, so instead of having one computer do ALL the work, they get thousands and thousands of computers searching through the data.

<a name="folding">Folding @ Home

Just a reminder, all, we had/have a folding @ home team up and going.

Quote:

What are proteins and why do they "fold"? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out their biochemical function, they remarkably assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, remains a mystery. Moreover, perhaps not surprisingly, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious effects, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson's disease.

What does Folding@Home do? Folding@Home is a distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases. We use novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously achieved. This has allowed us to simulate folding for the first time, and to now direct our approach to examine folding related disease.

How can you help? You can help our project by downloading and running our client software. Our algorithms are designed such that for every computer that joins the project, we get a commensurate increase in simulation speed.

What have we done so far? We have had several successes. You can read about them on our Science page, Results section, or go directly to our press and papers page.

Can Seti@home work on a PC behind a firewall?

Slavakion 03-03-2005 11:42 AM

Yes, just set your permissions to let it through.

crossova 03-03-2005 12:05 PM

cool, i had it on a pc back when it first came out. i totally forgot about it. I signed up.

Currently ranked at # 445

here's another really good stat site for F@H - http://folding.extremeoverclocking.c...php?s=&t=31697

Come on, we can do better - remember to fold your proteins with F@H instead of the Titty board

[Ever so slowly moving up in the Rankings.....

1833 Seti units crunched and still going. I have plans to build a linux cluster and see how many units I can crunch concurrently. Film at 11:00.

You guys should update your seti and folding @ home to BOINC

http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu

Download BOINC - install. It lets you use your 2nd (or more) processors on the same computer to do more work units.

JOIN TEAM TFProject !!!!!

One word of caution - your stats will start from zero - you will still have your old "classic" units but BOINC uses an entirely different system for scoring your work units so they don't carry over.

Right now only 2 of the TFProject SETI members moved to BOINC - hey, it's the new hotness! you should be running it too!

I should also mention - you can use BOINC to simultaneously run Folding@home, einstein@home, pirates@home, and some others - you tell BOINC what % of time each one gets, and then BOINC schedules them for you. Why only participate in one project when you can be a contributor to several???

11048 SETI classic units
51,488 BOINC Total Credits
40,339 BOINC SETI Credits

Ive added about 5 machines toward folding. I am climbing the ranks pretty fast..hehe. Hopefully all of these extra cpu cycles will actually result in better treatments for diseases.

Folding@home published research based on the folding results.

Abstract can be found a little down the page, or read the entire paper.

It's about how a certain protein (p53) folds to cause cancer.

I just wanted to tell everyone that the new Folding@Home client is in beta for both Windows and Linux. I have a machine already running the Linux version and seems to be fairly stable. (They might have been out for awhile I'm just noticing now though)

A new feature in beta is allowing you to get whats the max amount of RAM the actual client can be alloted. I think there are a few more features in the works for the final version like GPU utilization and to further improve dual-core and SMP machines.

Not really sure how much I will help, but I am willing to give it a try. I signed up for the SETI@home project.

Don't forget distributed.net which has a cash prize if you find the correct key to crack the code.

Mondak 11-17-2006 02:21 PM

I just joined up with folding. I will see what kind of impact I have. I have what I think is a killer machine and should have horsepower to spare. Not sure if I have it set up totally right but I will see if I get some good results.

MontanaXVI 05-16-2007 07:23 PM

just curious if anyone was doing any folding for the TFP on their PS3?

I ran it for a little bit and it just blows through units as I am sure everyone has heard by now.

Dilbert1234567 05-16-2007 07:49 PM

i'm still folding on a few of my systems.

Hain 12-09-2007 07:40 AM

Any news on when F@H is will be a BOINC project? I have been reading up on it and the last bit of news is from last year when cut backs halted development of the F@H on BOINC project.

Boinc is far better than F@H, in my opinion, because I have multi-core systems and none of the F@H clients work to maximize both cores. Even the tech guys tried out the new F@H clients and they fail to install properly even with administrative rights. I had been doing it the hillbilly way and installed 2 F@H clients instead. BOINC recognizes both cores and works properly to max both cores out.

Come'on F@H, you're letting me down here!

Hain 01-04-2008 02:41 PM

I have a bit of SPAM about BOINC and F@H and why you should support it in my journal here.

Scorpion23 01-29-2008 12:57 PM

I'm on BOINC as well. I'm crunching for Rosetta@home until folding gets moved to BOINC. It's still protein folding for disease prevention, just a different group than folding@home.

I'm also signed up with Einstein@Home. It searches for gravitational signals emitted by pulsars.

Hain 01-30-2008 12:19 AM

Quote:

A few years ago there was a serious effort to adapt the FAH uniprocessor client to the BOINC environment. This project did not succeed but it did discover quite a few differences in philosophy that were difficult to reconcile. At this point, I don't see any reason why a new project is needed that would force a reconciliation of those differences. Both FAH and BOINC seem quite capable of running without assistance from each other.

FAH scheduling is much more demanding than the BOINC infrastructure is designed to support. In fact, the newest FAH clients increase the scheduling demands by using the full resources of a Quad CPU, a GPU, or a PS3 to return work more quickly rather than allowing the allocation of a fraction of those resources. That simply means that you need to choose which you want to support.
In short, there will doubtful ever be an F@H client for BOINC because the deadlines are too strict for F@H. Plus if one runs multiple projects, as I do, the F@H will unlikely have enough time to complete a work unit.

I could always go back to set BOINC on one core and F@H on the other... but not fair as my BOINC runs a dozen projects to F@H's ... one.

I'm doing Rosetta@home too. I was wondering if there was a TFP team. I guess not. Maybe we should start one?

A project I think everyone should join:

Quote:

This distributed computing project is part of a larger project that is reverse engineering the brain in order to build a large scale artificial intelligence system. The first of its kind.
Yes it is skynet but what they hell. I just might as well welcome my robot masters.

Raghnar -ITA- 09-27-2009 12:46 AM

Another I choose is Einstein@Home.
Search the Sky for neutron stars.
