Thoughts on external usb hdd

I was looking into getting this hdd: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProduc...144-330&depa=1 I have an external wd 80gb 7200rpm drive in a firewire enclosure, but its huge and this one is much smaller. Anyone have experience with this drive or drives like them? Im mainly looking to get it to take on the road with me to use along with my lappy.

THanks for your input

Im currently in the market for one too

I keep looking at the Maxtors 60gig and 120gig 2.0 usb drives.

I have a few Maxtor internal drives and I've had no problems with them.

I have a couple maxtor 140 GB drives with dual interfaces, as well as an Iomega HDD 40 GB USB 2.0 drive. I love the portability and have never had any issues with reliability that I haven't seen on a comparable internal.

These days, most of the drives are sourced from the same few vendors anyhow, so there aren't huge differences in quality or price. Pick a fairly known brand and you're good to go.

Just my 2 cents.

I had a Maxtor 160HD External Drive and it lasted about six months. Now if I try to transfer a lump of material over, say, 500 or 600MB it locks up and stops transfering. It was $200 wasted. I got a Sony DVD burner (up to 4.7GB) to back up my music, videos, pics, etc. That was the best $150 I ever spent. No complaints with that. I hope that I was the exception to the rule with external harddrives but I won't do that again.

Its a bit misleading, you can in fact only store 4.3GB of data on a 4.7 GB disc

Really? I had no idea. If that is correct (which it probably is but I had never heard that before), thanks for the info. I will test that out next time I burn a DVD. Thanks

Sure, it's the formatted capacity. Just like a CD-R or a HDD. Formatted 20GB drives turn in to 18.6GB drives. Even a 650MB CD-R/W formatted to use like a floppy or HDD turns in to a scant 533MB.
