the iPod battery

I just heard a story on NPR about a guy who had an iPod for about 18 months and the battery died. He called Apple about replacing the battery and they told him it would cost over $200 to replace the battery and that he had might as well just get a new iPod!!! Has anyone else had this problem? I'm just want to know if it's common because I've been seriously considering getting an iPod, but if this is true, I think I'll pass.

If anyone is interested in hearing the story about this, here's the site. The story is called "Apple and the I-Pod Critic."

yeah that has been floating around quite a bit recently and can also be found HERE along with the spiffy little Quicktime movie they made about it.

just google ipod battery for other sites maybe someone else can post on what 3rd party batteries work and how well or how hard it is to replace one.

this news is old as dirt. it's been covered in many threads :)

here's the "official" deal: 3rd party companies are selling the batteries now, and Apple is actually trying to reduce the cost of replacing the battery for you. right now it's around 100 dollars.

Apple also said this guy had charged his iPod way more than he needed to, even if it didn't need charging. Apple says the batteries generally hold 500+ charges.....and the battery in these things apparently don't need to be charged that often......do the math.

me= MP3 CD player with 2 AA batteries. 120+ songs a disc and $2.50 a pair for batteries, unless you count my NimH batteries then nothing after initial cost. :D

Most of it is FUD. The batteries are good for 500 charges. I charge mine once, twice a week. At that rate, it should last me 5-10 years. What they dont tell you is that this guy was charging his at least once a day, sometimes more. No rechargable can handle that kind of use for long.

Yes, I've heard millions of rumours about iPod batteries dying early but I do IT in a "trendy" company and with 100+ iPod users, we have no battery issues. hell I broke my remote by being stupid and Apple sent me a new one for free.

Blah. iPod + TiVo make Jim a happy boy

popular science had an article about that. and if popsci has it, it has to be pretty dated. there are ways to open it up and replace it, although you have a risk of damaging your ipod. i would just get a different mp3 player
