Help w/ computer security
My friend just sold me his laptop. There is one problem though. There is a password to start it up, and he cant remember what it is. He hardly ever used it. Does anybody know how i can bypass the password.

try posting this in the computer forum
|
Is it a Networking Password, A bios password, or a windows Password?? In other words does it ask for a password before loading windows or after windows loads?
there are Different solutions for each. |
Many laptop mfgs provide their repair centers with a means to wipe out BIOS passwords. It might cost you a few $ tho.
You can find BIOS password cracks on the 'net if you can't get it working. Can't comment on their effectiveness. |
If it's a bios password, wouldn't removing the motherboard's battery reset the bios, like in a desktop? Or just bruteforce it.
|
The problem with accessing the mobo in the laptop is you have to take most if not all of the connections loose. It's a real pain to try and get them all back correctly when putting it back together. Especially the little flimsy video connection. Take it to an authorized repair shop if it's a BIOS password.

what kind of laptop is it ? maker/model number , theres generally a backdoor of somekind.
|
Theres a Jumper for Compaqs, I've got the link if you want it.
But, without the make and a model, I'm just guessing ;) |
Well, im pretty sure its a windows password, because Windows loads and then the password window comes up. Does that help?

Format and reinstall the OS.
or Use the "Offline NT password and registry editor: http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html |
If its any OS below Windows NT, 2000, or XP, you should be able to just ESC out.
Otherwise, check this out: http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ NOTE: I can not vouch for the safety of the above program. It may fix your problem, but read the docs carefully. www.sysinternals.com also has a pwd program, but I believe it is commercial. |
Doh! Sorry chodarama, looks like we were typing at the same time...

great minds think alike
|
I went to the Offline NT password and registry editor and i went to download the files, but there were four of them. Which ones do you download. Then what do you do, burn it to a cd and just put it in.
Here is the computer: IBM Thinkpad and it uses a pentium 3 and Windows 2000 Professional |
