valentine's joke

Somebody sent me this poem he found on Slashdot:

Roses are #FF0000
Violets are #0000FF
chown -R you ~/base

And the translation:
'Roses are red
Violets are blue
All my base are belong to you.'

And he said, "You still have to be a geek to understand the translation. Sorry."

Can somebody explain why this is funny?

losthellhound 02-17-2004 01:30 PM

Wow, very geeky.. First you have to understand the phenom. of "all your base" which I cant really explain in a short paragraph..

Im as geeky as they get and its not TOO funny. don't worry, you aren't missing much

All your base are belong to us

Here is the official site. It takes a while to load, so be patient.

The easy part was the red and blue as #FF0000 and #0000FF, in case you missed that one.

And, the short answer of the "base" part was that a few years ago, a bunch of people became obsessed over an old, badly-translated Japanese videogame. The signature phrase from the introduction was "All your base are belong to us".

I, for one, laughed pretty hard when I saw this poem. But, I'm a geek.

The first two lines have hexidecimal codes for colors used in HTML in them.

The last line is using programming language to make fun of a videogame that had a HORRID translation.

one of the lines was "all your base are belong to us." The leader of the bad guys was trying to say "All of your bases belong to us now" or the like. the "base" quote became popular because of its over-the-top crappy translation.

can't explain it any better than that :)

Wow! That IS funny! (I guess I'm an under-experienced geek.) Thanks for the explanations...

FYI - the all your base thing is a reference to a coin-operated game called Zero Wing. Basically, it was a japaneese game that was brought to America, and when that happened, the intro screens needed to be translated from Japaneese to English. Unfortunately, the folks who did the translation were a little less than proficient in their english, so certian phrases got mis-interpreted.

:) Very cool to see that again... kind of like the badger animation, it's just so corny it actually becomes cool.

>>>>>chown -R you ~/base<<<<<

what is that ^ part?
reference to some programming code?

chown?

Fallon 03-13-2004 08:04 AM

chown is a Linux command to change the ownership of a file/folder ~/ is the persons home directory so ~/base is his base and the -R means everything in the folder base. The "you" part changes the file/folders owner to you.
Hope that is accurate and it helps.

I thought that was very funny. I am a geek :)
