well, first off, in my opinion I would never buy a barracuda again, I have owned three and all of them went to shit within the first 7 months. second, welcome to the board, Im pretty new as well but if you would really like input, its good to toss in what the system is used for and all, you have a pretty powerful processor but what are you doing with it?
Also, I dont know if you are planning on buying from that site, but you can get that same P4 for about $90 cheaper at newegg.com, the home to many board members here. I may be just going on and on, but if you give more info, I assure you that you will get a lot better responses. Good luck on the new system! |
Yeah definitly look on newegg.com for the P4 3.0ghz I know its atleast 100 dollars cheaper. And what Toolbad says you need to tell us what your going to do with the machine.

see the thing is i'm in canada.. and newegg doesnt ship to canada.. DAMN THEM! lol.. but yea.. mainly my system would be used for schooling and gaming.. i have a video card to put in.. and also an audigy 2 as well..
what kind of hdd would you suggest then?.. i was thinking of maybe a 10k 36 gb WD Raptor drive.. but it may get a little to hot in the shuttle for that.. but yea.. any ideas.. totally open for suggestions here |
well I like Maxtor and Western Digital myself. If you really wanna get nuts with the system, I know I have read some pretty good reviews on the 740GB Raptor. For about $240 or so its a hell of a packed hard drive with 5 year warranty as well. Depending on how soon you want to build the system, watch out for NCQ hard drives, Ive read some specs on this and it looks quite promising!

id go for the a64 system myself
|
I would have gone for the 64 bit system if it were not for the price difference of the XP. I think I read that AMD will be coming out with a new version of the 64 fx in Q2 so hopefully the prices will drop like a mofo, hopefully there will be some good software to use with it by then too.

I've got the Shuttle 20th anniversary edition and absolutely love it. A64 is nice, but has no practical uses at this point (and if you're planning to use this for gaming, 64-bit gaming hasn't shown any real advantages yet.

I am currently running two of the Aopen X-cube "Silent Sea" boxes. One is running Mandrake PowerPack 9.2, the other is Win2k. Each has a Barton 2500+, (slightly overclocked in the bios), a gig of ram, a main 40Gb Seagate Barracuda HD, a Seagate 160Gb HDD, and a DVD-/+ RW. The Seagate drives are quiet, the machines both run (and look) cool. Glad I chose this over the shuttle for an AMD Box.

here's another question lol.. im new at building systems from scratch.. nothing at all installed.. what all do i need to do to install the OS? same as a format, just have the cd in? or wha?

I'm thinking about building a Shuttle system myself, gimme a PM when you finish up and tell me how she turns out. Those little boxes are sweet.
