What is your preferred browser?

Poll is just that... what is your preferred browser?

Personally, I prefer Mozilla Firebird http://www.mozilla.org/products/firebird/ for the following reasons:
- multi-platform
- fast rendor time
- tabbed browsing
- built-in popup blocker

What's yours?

edit: Netscape *IS* Mozilla, and added Konqueror/Safari

thephuse 01-27-2004 06:21 PM

i use ie cuz im lazy :D heh

ebeye 01-27-2004 06:28 PM

Firebird for teh win! I love tabbed browsing!

ratbastid 01-27-2004 06:34 PM

Totally love firebird EXCEPT The session management thing which is totally brain-dead.

What do you MEAN I can't have more than one instance of it running at once inside "my" session!? I can have more than one WINDOW open on it at once!

I use Firebird when I need something standards-compliant, and Galeon (which is a Mozilla-derived browser for the Gnome desktop) for stuff I leave up all the time (my company extranet, for instance) so it doesn't take up my one precious Firebird session.

IE rox my lil world. :P

sailor 01-27-2004 07:12 PM

Firebird, all the way.

Krycheck 01-27-2004 07:53 PM

Firebird

Used to use Opera but Firebird seems more friendly to me.

cheerios 01-27-2004 07:55 PM

CaMEEEno!

Camino rocks :) (mozilla variant).

btw: you missed safari, which i also use on occasion...

flamingpeach 01-27-2004 08:48 PM

firebird

Holo 01-27-2004 08:59 PM

Mozilla Firebird, and here's why:

Diggler - Diggler is a small but powerful add-on for Mozilla and Netscape. It adds a button next to the location bar which can clear the location bar (much like the one in Konqueror) but also drops down a menu with some useful actions such as being able to disable popup windows and navigate to parent directories in URLs (handy for FTP operations and nested sites).

Screenshots

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Linky- Linky is a very simple addon to the context menu that provide you with the following:

Opens all links in a selection in new tabs or windows
Finds and opens link in plain text in a new tab or window
Opens all links on page in new tabs or windows
Open all links that appears to be linking to an image in new tabs or windows
Shows all links that appears to be linking to an image in one new tab or window
Open all links that appears to be linking to an image in one new tab or window
Select links Dialog
Preferences panel

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Leech- If you have ever wanted a quick way to download all the files (images, video clips, zip archives, etc.) from a single page, then the leech add-on is for you. It integrates wget into the right click menu so you can launch it on a page in a single click.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

SpiderZilla- Integrates Httrack into Mozilla's tools menu. Good for a quick and dirty download, but lacks the customization the full version has.

Screenshot

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

And the best tool of all..

RefSpoof- An integrated URL spoofer!

Screenshot
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Add to this the default stuff like popup blocking and protection from various ActiveX objects and Spyware this is THE browser to look for porn on the web.

In my tutorial I already cover Linky, an addon that allows you to open multiple links in a tab or tabs. The problem is that if you find sets that aren't directly linked as jpg, e.g. hotchick.html where the HTML contains the jpg and prevents leeching youre screwed. Not anymore.

Tab Downloader is an add-on for Mozilla and Netscape 7.0 that allows you to automatically save the content of all tabs that follow the current tab. This makes it very easy to bulk download images from websites, especially when used in conjunction with background tab loading.

http://www.bengoodger.com/software/t.../mozilla.shtml

It's exclusively made for Firebird(Phoenix) now but there are older version that are for Mozilla. I'm using it to rip a site by hand and it's already saved me 800 right click save as

numberfive 01-27-2004 09:09 PM

IE. I used Opera for about half a year because of the little gestures but it kept giving me problems so I made the hard switch back to IE.

viper11885 01-27-2004 10:52 PM

Using Opera now. Works great and I like that there are so many features in there. It is loaded.

But some pages don't display correctly. For these type of sites, I use MyIE2. Really good program that uses IE but adds a lot more features to it.

txd 01-28-2004 02:24 AM

definately has to be firebird, although I had been using the mozilla suite for some time as firebird was a tad unstable.

SiN 01-28-2004 05:37 AM

I've been using Opera for a while...

tried using Firebird yesterday, but getting it to do what i want was proving to be very frustrating, so I'm giving up until they refine it a bit more and the plugin/theme/etc developers catch up a bit.

:)

Rawrr 01-28-2004 05:47 AM

Firebird

Destrox 01-28-2004 09:37 AM

ie.. it does everything i need. so why switch?

feelgood 01-28-2004 10:21 AM

Isn't Opera kinda like IE? I mean after all, when I installed Opera I noticed how much similaries between Opera and IE until I realize Opera was borrowing components of IE. I think that's a bit of a rip off.

I used Netscape but it kinda suck, especially if it doesn't like you use the keyboard to navigate around the internet. Eg: Use Backspace to return to previous page, etc etc

I'm a IE user because I'm one of those kind of people that likes to suck up to Microsoft :P

oberon 01-28-2004 01:09 PM

I use Konqueror 99% of the time. IE for IE-specific sites, and Mozilla for the few sites left that Konqy doesn't render correctly.

Please clarify... I'm using Opera all the time and I don't even have IE installed on my system. I also think it's way more standards compliant than IE and it loads pages a lot faster (though recent versions seem to have deteriorated in that area)
Personally I don't think they are all that similar.

Btw: I most often use Opera but does not show all sites correctly. Most of these use specific 'tricks' IE introduced... For this I use Konquerer. (mainly online banking)

glytch 01-28-2004 09:25 PM

I voted for Opera, but after seeing these responses I decided to give Firebird a go. I have to say, I like it and there's only a couple things bothering me. Sometimes on certain pages, Mozilla doesn't like to download from links, which isn't a big problem, I can switch to IE for that one thing. Something I would really like to know though....How do I get the links I click on to open in a new tab instead of a whole new window? This was one of the features in Opera I guess I took for granted. Is there any way to do this in Firebird?

NukingFuts 01-28-2004 11:23 PM

Camino

hawkeye 01-29-2004 12:48 AM

Firebird. I finally switched over about six hours ago. the most recent security hole in IE was what made me get of my ass and do it. I'm already enjoying it.

ctrl-click

-Anders 01-29-2004 03:04 AM

I use normal mozilla, I don't know if opera has the ability to set e minimum font-size, I know firebird sure dosent, and thats one of the features I _really_ need.
Combined with tabbrowser extentions, it's a great browser :)

bundy 01-29-2004 04:55 AM

i use Firebird.

AxByC 01-29-2004 06:11 AM

At the moment im using MyIE. seems pretty good. not sure if im going to give up opera just yet though.

Vaultboy 01-29-2004 07:44 AM

Mozilla Firebird kicks ass. Lean, Mean, multiplatform... it rocks. I'm waiting for a version 0.9 to be released though, since they'll probably start charging for it from v1.0.

I'm a dotcommunist, baby. Everything on the internet should be free (or at least paid for by someone else, especially if that someone is Microsoft).

VeXteR 01-29-2004 08:10 AM

HOLO, you are my freaking hero. At first it was just the titties in your sig, but now im really sprung. I had heard their was some plugins for FB but I had no clue.

zenmaster10665 01-29-2004 08:24 AM

MyIE2. I used to love opera...but these days MYIE2 is all i use.

rubicon 01-29-2004 11:04 AM

Hate to say it, but I use IE under XP. I don't feel like dealing with file association hijacking and other fun stuff that goes on with using other browsers (ie: bloatware). I suppose Firebird would be fine.

However, I use Safari under OS X and occasionally Firebird.

I use MyIE2.

I tried many others, but MyIE2 works very well for me, and does everything I need in a browser.

shimmy1 01-29-2004 01:40 PM

I used to use Mozilla FireBird, but I got tired of installing plug-ins every two seconds. I know it doesn't take that long and it's worth it, but I'm sticking with IE until I get a new computer.

santafe5000 01-29-2004 02:12 PM

I currently use IE and have for many years. Recently i dowloaded Mozilla 6, just to try something different. Haven't quite got it figured out but am trying.

middle click

glytch 01-30-2004 08:13 AM

Thanks, hammer4all, that'll work. I'm still not sold on Firebird though. I definately notice the speed increase, especially when loading many pictures on a page (Opera likes to stall for a little bit for some reason), but the mouse gestures and a few other minor things are probably going to make me go back to using Opera.

powerclown 01-30-2004 07:04 PM

IE6, cuz everything online is optimized for it.

bigbad 01-31-2004 03:07 AM

Using IE at the moment, because I like having everything work properly for it, after some of the big exploits I've been hearing about it lately thought looking at Firebird more closely.

ninety09 01-31-2004 09:03 AM

Using Opera and loving it =)

I also use MyIE2 as my secondary browser.

Tried Firebird and didn't like it that much..

Mouse gestures are available for Firebird too. You just have to install the extension. :)

http://texturizer.net/firebird/extensions/

glytch 02-01-2004 08:05 AM

Oh I have the mouse gesture extension. It's just not, in my opinion, implemented as well as Opera's.

nanofever 02-01-2004 12:41 PM

Mozilla, because I like knowing what URL I'm really at.

SonicRL 02-01-2004 01:48 PM

I personally just use IE6 because I'm too lazy to try any other ones xD. Although I used to use Opera, but after I reformatted, I just stuck with IE.

02-01-2004 04:15 PM

Using IE but I was thinking about switching to FireBird. but then I heard that Roboform does not work with it so for now im sticking with IE.

Where did you hear this? I haven't heard anything of the sort and, frankly, highly doubt it's true.

02-01-2004 05:50 PM

Mozilla

Features/options and why i love mozilla

1 animations only run once "Checked" cause i hate annoying smiley animaged gifs
2 only show images from url's orignating server "checked" good bye most ads.
3 surpress pop ups (save for allowed sites) "checked"
and the most important feature and why i can never use IE as the last version i tried didn't have it.

4 Tabbed Browsing!!

mrap1 02-01-2004 06:41 PM

MIE2, it offers the conveniece of being IE compliant but it adds a hell of a lot more features to it. MYIE2 now is what IE will be in the future.

Mastershredder 02-01-2004 08:50 PM

CrazyBrowser all the way. www.crazybrowser.com :)

BoCo 02-01-2004 09:22 PM

considering giving Firebird a try, because ive heard good things, but for now, Opera is my baby.

Or at least what it should be.

MyIE2 spanks IE in terms of features but MS doesn't seem to be that worried. In their minds the browser war is over so they can't justify spending more money on R&D for IE.

kapoho 02-04-2004 08:47 AM

I use Opera 7 99% of the time. IE for windows updates and certain sites that only work with IE.

Confederate 02-04-2004 08:52 AM

I also use IE6 i have no problem with it at all, so why fix what isn't broken?

laconic1 02-04-2004 01:02 PM

I use Firebird. I usually hit F11 as soon as I open the browser and I like having the address bar even with the browser full screened. Also tabbed browsing, and a better "feel" to it than with IE.

mgcloud 02-08-2004 11:05 PM

A vote for firebird here :) Compliance to HTML standards and not to poorly written code is my favourite thing about it (along with teh tabs/auto popup killing)

Yea, I also highly doubt that firebird will be a non-free browser in the future because it's released under a public license. Even if it becomes commercial software (not likely), anyone can jsut take the code from previous releases (or even cvs if lucky) and rebuild the software under a different name.

PorscheBunny 02-09-2004 03:17 PM

Mozilla 1.2.1 - the last version made for my computer's OS.

I really need to upgrade.

BenChuy 02-10-2004 05:56 AM

safari. a fantastic and uber-functional browser.

SecretMethod70 02-10-2004 06:57 AM

FireFOX baby! :D

k1ng 02-10-2004 07:10 AM

Ok, so i'm really digging Firefox. I've never even heard of it until I saw this post. Thanks guys =)

One big thing I've found so far that I can't do is go to other networked computers using Firefox.

With IE I could just type: \\test in the address bar and it would take me to tests's shared files. Firefox would not allow me to do this.

Is there a way to do it in Firefox?

Thanks!

ToolBag 02-10-2004 07:11 AM

There could possibly be an extension for this, I really have no idea but keep an eye on the site as traffic slows down and the extension page may be back up shortly.

That's likely because IE is integrated into the OS (see the issues behind the most recent Microsoft anti-trust trial which was going wonderfully until Asscroft took over the DOJ). Perhaps there may be an extension to add that functionality but I doubt it.

deepinjello 02-11-2004 08:42 AM

I'm an Opera man, myself.

Prince 02-14-2004 08:40 PM

I've tried several...always keep coming back to IE, though. Tried Firebird before the new release, last year sometime, didn't like it, hated the tab thing... Am giving it another try now, we'll see... Lots of people argue over which browser is best...and a lot of folks say IE is shit simply because it's hip to bash Microsoft... But really, the only way you're going to find the browser of your dreams is by using the same method you use to find the girl of your dreams... You try one, and another, and another, until the one that tickles you right comes along.

KUGR 02-15-2004 01:27 AM

Mine is Firebird/fox :) Tabbed browsing, pop-up/ad blocking, and all the other awesome features just cant be beat!!!

Gotenks 02-15-2004 03:36 AM

IE w/ google bar!

panmunjom 02-15-2004 04:21 AM

IE6 with Google toolbar and <a href="http://www.proximatron.org">Proximatron</a>.

Finchie 02-15-2004 10:25 AM

Firefox with Tabbrowser extensions. I used to be a big fan of Avantbrowser, but it continually made my computer screen black for some reason.

brandon11983 02-15-2004 10:41 AM

Firefox is kickin my ass. I love it.

eyeronic 03-02-2004 10:12 PM

Is Mozilla Firebird going to mess with normal surfing for a somewhat clueless web surfer? (Like myself) i.e., is it as easy to use and doesn't mess up on simple websites as IE?

Eye use IE6, but don't particularly like or dislike it.

Latch 03-02-2004 10:59 PM

eyeronic.. you'll want Firefox, not Firebird. Firebird is the name of an older version.

Firefox shouldn't mess with you too much. Check out the Mozilla Firefox thread that's on the front page (at the moment) for people's reviews/questions/etc.

_the_wombat 03-02-2004 11:23 PM

I use Firefox for most things. It has trouble some stuff I do regulary, IE fills in.

Bugs and all I think it's pretty nice. :)

Sledge 03-04-2004 09:28 PM

I tried switching over from MyIE2 to FireFox, but it didn't really work out. MyIE2 has all the features of FireFox and loads just as fast. The only thing I realllly like about FireFox is the speed with which it displays web pages. That shit is hot.

HeAtHeN 03-04-2004 10:53 PM

I use Opera 7.5 for just about everything. There are some sites that are still wonky and I have to use IE but not many.

Opera is the shit....

elko64 05-13-2005 01:53 PM

i reccomend all mac users try out shiira, you'll be amazed at how fast it renders compared to safari 2 :-O!!!!!
