Check out my new G5!

What does it run?

Windows XP.

He could have done a better job, but this quote is priceless:

Quote:

When I showed my friend, who happens to love Apple, he looked sick. He did not say anything to me. He just put his hands on his head and was in shock. I wish I had a picture of that.
I think that he had one major flaw in it though.

Ill admit, despite the fact that I dont like macs, my only gripe is the operating system.

He should have just installed linux.

Idiot.

merkerguitars 01-27-2004 11:50 AM

Hehehe classic

The_Dude 01-27-2004 11:51 AM

now that's beautiful!!

ubertuber 01-27-2004 11:53 AM

Wow - that's an expensive case!

sailor 01-27-2004 12:55 PM

Thats nuts man--a dual G5, and he scrapped it because he didnt like Macs? Screw that, for a machine like that, learn to like them.

darkure 01-27-2004 01:11 PM

well, he wasn't a complete ass about it. He did give those brand new G5 parts to his buddy who likes Apple computers. It's not as if they are sitting in a pile in his closet collecting dust.

arch13 01-27-2004 01:46 PM

I think I feel sick to my stomach reading that. It just so.....Wrong.
If you don't like macs, sell it on Ebay. Jeeze. his parents would have understood.
I'm going to go cry now.

Perfectly said arch13.

It's pretty said how he did that

Cynthetiq 01-27-2004 02:47 PM

what a waste.... seems like he'd also get a ferarri and change the engine to a chevy since he likes the sound it makes better.

bundy 01-27-2004 05:08 PM

i feel like crying...

exactly... thats just a very very sad story...

juanvaldes 01-27-2004 05:08 PM

I do believe that is the most expensive computer case in history.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure G5 is a great computer, but I wanted a Dell for Christmas.
I think this explains it all......

This HAS to be a joke.

Please... GOD... let it be a joke.

cheerios 01-27-2004 08:36 PM

*pours one on on the curb for her homie*

rest in piece, G5...

If it wasn't for the hole that was cut into that back....

Holo 01-27-2004 08:54 PM

wow...I'm a PC user since the beginning in '99 but I'll tell ya I wouldn't gut a fucking G5!!! I'd throw some *nix on it and prolly jerk off at some benchmark scores. :o :D

RelaX 01-27-2004 11:22 PM

hehehe I g2g show this to my apple friend... if I was an apple fan I'd be sick, but my only thought is that maybe he should've installed SuSe.

I hope his parents never find out though... I mean, jeez, the kid just completely overhauled an entire machine. The G5 case is just a facade right now...

Still... cool case. ;)

skinbag 01-28-2004 12:07 PM

Blasphemy! I like my Dell, but a G5, oooooohhggggrrghh !!! I was going to call him a name, but since he gave the parts to his friend I'll just call it his loss for being a dumbass...Ooops, I couldn't help it.
I'd still take my old Apple (733mhz. G4) over my new Dell (1.5 ghz. Pentium M) any day, hands down. Why? The OS. I can use both, and to me the Apple is WAY easier to use. File names and locations actually tell you what the file IS..No shit! *rambling* OSX starts up quicker too, even on a slower processor. I could go on, but I crossed into a rant..(The images were too graphic for my sensitive eyes. I have been scarred for life.)

kel 01-28-2004 02:18 PM

God... what stupidity... once the g5 edition of gentoo comes out...

-Anders 01-29-2004 03:09 AM

I would have been thrilled if I got a g5. Man why would anyone want to get rid of that monster? *Cries*

rubicon 01-29-2004 11:12 AM

It's nice to see PC users upset at what he did. Usually just Mac users would get upset.

Man, what a waste. He probably also got a BMW for his 16 birthday and trashed it 3 months later after a night of drinking.

We've got people on this board who can barely afford a $300 PC and he destroyed a $3000 box.

IT'S CALLED "RETURN TO APPLE STORE FOR CREDIT" AND THEN BUY YOUR DELL Moron.

VitaminH 01-29-2004 03:47 PM

Makes me sick. Both at the sheer waste of money here, as well as as a Mac user. What a waste, what a complete and utter waste..."whaaaah I wanted a Dell for xmas so I'll waste my parents' money they spent on it," as well as likely their money again to gut it and put PC parts in it. It just has spoiled brat written all over it. Angers me to no end.

Re: TFP G5 Forum

I didn't read all the replies, but, I would really like to add a G5 to my little home network.
All my stuff is geared toward dos/msoft. I run one Pentium (my Thinkpad), two AMD's (3000 and 3200), but with an open mind, that does not want to get involved in open source, I think the display model G5 at the 'puter store was kick ass!
It had a hefty price tag, was quiet, fast, and clean looking. I just can't see changing all my stuff for that.
I have quiet, clean, fast computers now.
I would like to try a different OS, on a different machine for awhile.

*I have played with red hat, knoppix, dos, nt, and windows (which could be dos or new technology), so please, just read my message and understand that I want you to send me a G5 for a tryout, and I will give an unbiased test. It might take a year or two, but I am up to the task.

If that is acceptable, please include a baby sitter, and a steady paycheck whilst I play with the MAC. I am sure my wife will take up the slack.

Sure looked real... but here's a quote from the guy who did it.

"Are the pictures real? Yes. Is it my own G5 case that has been cut and hacked? Yes. Did I give away two G5 2GHz processors (IBM PC 970)? No! So what happened? I got a free G5 shell from a buddy of mine and pulled a prank on a Mac loving friend. He got so upset. I wrote up a little story, my imagination and warped sense of humor kicked in. I sent it to OC.com just to see the reaction. I honestly didn't think it was going to be posted."

ChrisJericho 01-31-2004 01:19 AM

Cool.... a $1500 computer case.

yakimushi 01-31-2004 12:04 PM

YEP!

ok, heres a full follow up, it was a hoax, but a very good one.

full story:

Quote:

The Overclockers.com website published a barely believable hoax last week detailing the gutting of a brand new and very expensive Power Mac G5. This brought on an unbelievable reaction from the Mac community.

The hoaxer, identified only as "Andy," claimed he received a dual-processor G5 for Christmas. But preferring a Windows PC, he swapped out the insides of the $3,000 machine for the guts of a cheapo PC. The post included several digital photographs to prove the outrageous claim.

The stunt quickly became meme of the week. As news of it spread around the world, it generated the best traffic ever for the long-running Overclockers site, which claimed more than 300,000 visitors a day.

Reaction from the Mac community was swift and brutal.

Andy said his e-mail inbox quickly filled to capacity, with more than 1,300 messages, and an unknown number bounced. The mail he did receive was full of nice, kind thoughts like death threats, insults and all kinds of colorful invective.

"I hope your PC blows up and leaves your miserable face disfigured forever," read one. "You will surely burn in hell for an eternity for this one."

Another said Andy should be hung by his testicles and set on fire.

"Turning a perfectly good dual G5 into a crappy PC was the ticket that got you to hell," wrote another, citing the common eternal damnation theme. "And if you were in front of me I'd pop a corn-born Teflon bullet from my Glock in your fucking face."

It wasn't just hate-filled e-mail. Haddock labeled Andy "possibly the most stupid person on the planet."

"I posted it and the world turned upside down," said Joe Citarella, who runs the Overclockers site. "It was absolutely incredible.... I've never seen a reaction as intense and emotional as this. The reaction has been nothing short of an avalanche."

"Some people took it really, really hard," he continued. "I guess it shows Mac users relate to their machines differently.... We've gutted Dells and we never got a 'My God you desecrated a Dell!' reaction."

Andy, a PC technician in his 20s who lives on the East Coast, said he was given an empty G5 case by a buddy (he declined to explain further) and filled it with PC components to fool another friend. For further kicks, he invented the Christmas story and submitted it to Overclockers. He said he had no idea it would cause such a fuss.

"I am astonished as to how fast and far this went," he said. "I got e-mails from people in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Spain, Ireland, Germany, U.K., Portugal, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand and Australia just to name a few places besides the U.S."

Andy said he was critiqued by PC users as well as Mac fans, but the truly unbalanced stuff came from the Mac camp.

"Mac users are nuttier than a fruitcake," Andy said. "People have an unnatural emotional attachment to object(s) like computers. For some, their reaction was akin to me butchering their parents or a beloved pet."

Andy said some of the mail commented on his troubled psyche and warned of future mental problems. But "the majority of people just cussed me and said I was insane."

"I didn't expect to get any responses," he said, "but some of them were rather amusing so I laughed a lot and shared with friends. I had no idea that so many people in the world were so gullible."

Feeling guilty, Andy wrote to the site explaining the whole thing was just a little joke.

But Citarella said some of the site's readers don't believe Andy's explanation.

"His last message is kind of contrite, but a lot of people out there think he's covering up his butchery," Citarella said. "Some people think he's making it up to protect himself.

"I'm a parent, and if my son did something like this (to a new computer) I'd kill him."
What a great job, I gotta applaud 'Andy' for that trick, had me fooled by his faked stupidity...

We deserved that, you may laugh now.

gibingus 02-05-2004 01:46 PM

that's hilarious.

seriously though, it would be cool to have a boot screen to select other operating systems. has anyone tried to put linux on a g5 to run along side panther?

Incognito24 02-05-2004 10:15 PM

haha what an idiot, what if thats just a cover up cuz the dumbass acually did gut the G5, as much as im a PC user and hate macs, =P, i would NEVER touch a G5 or even a G4 they are pretty good, i would just never use the mac OS

numist 02-06-2004 12:21 AM

gibingus - when they introduced OSX, right before I left the mac business, I installed linux over mac osx, it worked fine, I imagine dual booting would be no more difficult than on any other machine.

Macs are fine, overpriced, but good lookin and powerful. As hardware, that is.

Software-wise, turn to linux for macs.

hulk 02-06-2004 03:03 AM

I don't know why everybody insists on Linux of MacOS, there's a lot less Linux Apps out there.

hahaha 02-06-2004 09:39 PM

Hah, reminds me of the kid in one of my Computer Science classes, comes to class everyday with an Ibook. Everyone hates him for it.
