ACDC Power Supplies
Hey-
I need a new power supply for an emachine. Problem is, they didn't allow enough room for a generic ATX powersupply -- although it does appear to use the ATX connector. Any ideas? The existing one has a really high pitched whine and I can't sleep in the same room -- not to mention the explosion risk  I need to get this computer running ASAP. I need a Linux file server for my in-house network. |
Any ideas on the dimensions of micro-ATX power supplies?

I am fairly certain a micro-ATX will work for you. My parents a while back had a cheapo 433 MHz HP Pavilion with the small case and their power supply blew. I replaced with a micro-ATX pwr supply and it worked fine. IIRC, when I bought the new supply they specifically mentioned e-machine compatibility.

The Micro-ATX PSU that you and goddfather mentioned is the correct one. My brother's old HP used one; they're the same dimensions all around (like most ATX PSUs are the same dimensions). Make sure you get one with at least 90w or above for MicroATX.
