PS2 problems
 

Hi, I got a PS2 for Xmas last year, so all was cool for a while.
Then last spring it started making a skipping noise, especially when playing the GTA games I borrowed (btw those games are thee BOMB) So I laid off it for a while..decided to punch it with my fist..got a bruise but it worked :cool:
So now it's doing the same thing (skipping) except its on EVERY game ALL the TIME. I got a DVD Lens cleaner disc, I blowed some canned air into the chassis, punched it etc etc.. still not working.
I even popped in the tried and trusted LoTR TTT game (that worked last spring and didn't skip..ever) and it didn't work.

So what could I do to make it working again?

PS2's are actually made with pretty shoddy parts, so many start having problems after only a year or two. Due to the fact they have the shittiest filter ever put on a fan, dirt can get into the smallest places of the boards inside and that can cause problems. If you dont think its a dirt problem it might be a weak motor (which is pretty common Ive found after fixing quite a few PS2's over the last 2 years), flip it upside down and it will probably work, for a while anyway.

that link that -z3r0- posted is great for problems with your ps2. Although it's more about how to fix disc read errors than skipping. The best advise I can give is to clean the laser with a qtip and some rubbing alcohol (also mentioned in the link) because disc cleaners don't always get all the dirt. be very careful with your lens though and try not to drench it, because you can leave spots.

I had PS2 problems for a while (mainly DRE's) and I came across a few helpful sites like the one posted above. I even came across one that had something to do with a class action suit against Sony or something like for making PS2 as shitty as it was.

But after using the fixes, I haven't had a lot (just a couple) problems.

Ever check out ebay for ps2's? There are a ridiculus amount that are being sold with read errors.

I had this same issue with my PS2, then I sold it. It is a flaw in some of the Sony PS2, hopefully you bought the extended warranty, if not, conatct Sony for repairs.

Most definately the most common error for PS2, and XBOX believe it or not. Sony's warranty is only for 3 months i believe, so if you didnt get an extended one, then start lookin for another one. It'll cost you a pretty penny to actually fix it. Even if you do, it might screw up again.

i bought one of the first ps2's to come out. After a little more than a year it wouldn't power up. I returned it with my Metal Gear Solid disk stuck in the drive. Long story short, i ended up getting credit for the console, but never heard from my game again. (i suppose that is to be expected)

I know that problems like that are rare, but they do seem to be more common than a person would expect from a videogame console. I've been playing my NES and SNES for years and years, no problems yet. They don't build-em like they used ta ;)

My PS2 developed a problem about 8 months after I bought it. My friend knocked a Vegeta figurine from his shelf into my PS2 while the disc tray was open.....it barely clipped the tray, but from then on the PS2 would say "disc read error" every time you put anything in it. A then-$300 piece of hardware should be more tough than that.....I traded my busted PS2, a 56k modem, and 40 bucks to my friend for his working PS2. I haven't had any problems with this one so far. Luckily.

I've heard from numerous sources online that there is a way to fix this error, the "disc read error." Something about sticking scotch tape on the inside of ANY disc, and it cleans the reader in the PS2 or something.....they say it only takes once, and it fixes it for a couple of months. I'd look around for it.


Sony won't pay for shit if it's after 3 months.

I have never had any disk read problems. but when i try playing dvds sometimes, a huge black box blocks most of the screen. All of these DVDs are official legal copies. Does anyone know what the cause of this is and how i can fix it, it seems to happen at totally random times.

Not in my case - I bought my PS2 3 years ago and had the DRE for the first time last month. I called the 888 number in the phone book for Sony Canada, answered a few questions and they told me to send the unit to the Canadian warehous in Whitby. And they would fix the problem and send it back. Total cost of shipment would be about $15 with insurance. Luckily my Dad was heading to Toronto and took it with him down and brought it back when he came back to Ottawa. Total cost for a fixed PS2 = $0.

My friend had a problem with his PS2 where it wouldn't read Blue Disc games. He called and complained and Sony fixed it all for free. Suprisingly, mine has worked just fine for over 2 years.

I did the same thing. Sony knows that they have put a shody piece of equipment on the market and i think they are trying to cover thier asses. Just go to the ps2 website and find the customer service number and tell them whats up.

the blue games dont work on mine either, is it just because its a first generation ps2?

LOL some of the old mainframes that cost MILLIONS would have to be reprogrammed if some cockroaches fried on the boards.

well Sony USA won't fix 'em (for free). I've ran into lots of people who were in my situation here in the US, and they tell you basically to fuck off, or pay 100+ dollars to get it fixed. and you have to pay the shipping.
