I got StyleXP and Litestep running. Here's a screenshot of my desktop.

Its all about StyleXP but where did you get Litestep?

To the LiteStep users: Have you been able to get your systray working? I've tried a couple different distros to no avail.

Anyone looking at alternative shells, I've found shellcity.net to be a pretty good starting point. I've found most of the shells out there to be kinda flakey, except litestep (if not for the damn systray problem).

Anyone who wants to see some coolness, check out the 3D desktops as well. Spaces for windows is a pretty cool desktop alternative: www.spatialresearch.com

I use Ohussain's (http://ohussain.cjb.net) distro of litestep and haven't had any troubles with my systray at all. A lot of the times, the individual modules get bugged by the theme itself, not by the distro you are using. Try using his default theme (austerity) and see if it works.

What kind of system resources does litestep use? It seems to me that it would suck down quite a bit...

tehblaed 01-18-2004 10:10 AM

Not a lot at all, comparitively. Since LS is a complete replacement for explorer, and LS uses less resources (with a normal amount of modules loaded) than explorer does, you actually free up resources when going from explorer > litestep.

StyleXP worked for me. I should really buy that.

aston shell if perfect for my old comp, uses less resources than explorer

I found Object Desktop to be feature-rich, bloatware, unstable, and really pushed my CPU and vid card cycles.

I use StyleXP now. It's stable, uses no resources, and does exactly what I need and nothing more.

Object Desktop/Windowblinds, looks pretty good, massive number of skins, and is not that much of a resource hog
