Converting MPEG to AVI
I just installed a TV Tuner card (WinFast TV 2000XP Deluxe).
The main reason I bought this card was the ability to record documentaries in better than VHS quality. The software allows recording in MPEG1 and MPEG2. Is there a program that will allow me to convert the MPEG file into an AVI or DivX like most all other video files I have downloaded are? I am looking to have a file size around 600-700MB per 60 mins of video. |

check out 'virtualdub' it's free and it can convert for you. |
Virtualdub is a nice program, but you can also just record in the highest quality setting for mpeg1. This would give you a 700MB file for a 70min file, with the added bonus of being in the correct format to burn a VCD with it.

Thanks Virtualdub worked well.
The other thing I need to know is whether it is best to edit (ie removing comercials etc.) then convert or convert then edit? I was able to use Virtualdub to edit the mpeg2 and then convert it to avi. I do not see an option however to save the edited version over the original mpeg in case I want to burn one to DVD. Any recommended programs? |
virtualdub doesn't really care either way, just set it to direct stream, cout out the commersials, then save as avi!
Easily the greatest video program ever made! |
