stuck at welcome screen
I was working on my boses computer at hes house. And for some reason It sits at win xp home welcome screen for at least a min. Most of the time not thinking. Just like idling there. its a hp pavilion 533c. let me know if you guys know why its so slow at start up. Its a 2.4 ghz with 512 ram i would not think it would take that long. And i turned off all the startup items. So that cant be the problem.

This is a generic answer, but have you ran Ad-Aware and Spybot on it? Spyware and Adware will cause a PC to slow down exponentially, but it doesn't typically cause start-up issues. Just a suggestion!

is it on a network (say out to a cable modem)? XP's start-up can almost freeze as it's looking for the DHCP to assign it an IP address.

it is on a network that is not online. Multiple computers hooked up on a hub. But non of them are on the internet or ever have. Can you get spyware without being on the net?
