Got Windoze XP? I need a BIG favour from you...

I run win2K and my wife runs win98. I have recently connected them together via an ADSL modem/router (Alcatel Speedtouch 510). I've then tried to map each others hard drives together, and it's well, intermittently working to say the least. For the last few weeks it's not worked at all.

My dad recently upgraded to XP, and my mum is still running 98. I put a CAT5-crossed between them, and mapped their hard drives together quite happily. However, the big difference there is that XP ran a network connection wizard and created a disk to run on the win98 computer. Once I ran the small program on the disk, the two computers started talking to each other quite happily. Foolishly, I didn't keep a copy of that disk, as I only thought after I had left again that it could actually come in rather useful.

I have no idea if running that same program on her computer will make it talk to my w2k computer, but it's certainly worth a try. This is where I need a hand - I need someone with XP to create me that disk and email it to me!

PM me if you can help and I'll let you know where to send it. Many, many thanks in advance!

Not sure what the software disk is that you're referring to. Maybe a network client disc for Windows 98 but that's something that comes from Windows 2000 Server, not XP (AFAIK).

If you create a network share using any Windows product they should all be able to connect to it - 98, 2000, XP, etc. Make sure that "Everyone" has Read or Read/Write access to the share and in the case of XP/2000 make sure the user account has rights at the file level.

Make sure that Guest is enabled (it's disabled by default on XP) otherwise you need to create a user account on 2000 and XP for any user that connects.

Assuming that Guest is active, Everyone has Read access to the share, you're good to go. Oh, don't forget to run the same protocol on all clients (TCP/IP). I would remove IPX and NetBEUI from the 98 machine.

after u run the network setup wizard on an xp machine, it offers u create floppys that have copies of the wizard.

it actually only has a file called 'netsetup.exe'

i uploaded a copy of it, download it here.

The_Dude: Downloaded, run, and it worked wonderfully! Thank you so much! My other half is happy!
