That's all I have to say, is...

:D

Yessss... Up and running... :)

Though something fucked up with the modules, so I had to compile the network/nfs/vfat/etc support into the kernel... :hmm:

Hahaha... Yeah, it can be pretty scary. If you have a machine that it doesnt matter if it gets screwed though, it makes it much less so.

Ditto on Suse. w00t!
Anyone know when that will happen? The HD on my linux box torched so I have to re-install anyway.

Call me a linux newb but all I can see that's better about this kernel is better usb support.

Can someone enlighten me on what else is better about this kernel? I remember reading somewhere that this was a significant step forward in linux development.

The process scheduling algorithms and virtual memory are handled in a far more modern manner. They now work better with large multi-processor systems. For the regular end user I don't think 2.6 offers much

Unfortunately, this is the sort of thing that makes people revolt in fear from Linux.

In my case, it's an exercise in frustration dealing with that something that. I want to spend time using the system, not trying to fix problems - I do enough of that already.

But I do have a copy of SuSE 9 that I'm looking forward to using.

Yep, you're right...
But fixing these problems will make you understand how the whole thing works. The learning experience can be painful, be I think it's worth it...

And anyway, within a short period of time the kernel will be available in an RPM package, so the fearful users can issue an "apt-get install kernel#2.6.0"... :)

Feels a lot better

One of the biggest improvements in the 2.6.0 kernel is the "feel" of the system. After you get it installed (beware, you will need a new modules package "init-tools" or you will run into modules problems like some other people above), you will see what I mean. They really did a lot of focusing on making things more responsive, and payed attention to the "drag the window around a lot" test, to see how it all seemed. Overall it's a large step forward for making linux "feel" faster than 2.4 releases, which had some problems with feeling like molasses when enough was going on.
