Cable or DSL

Which one is better? Also is ASDN worth it?

well i have both and they both suck, since my cable is non docsis so anyone can suck up all the bandwidth they want too and eave you with none, the ADSL is pacbell and its horribly bad.

its really dependant on the area, on paper ADSL should be better, since its not shared, cable can be faster sometimes.

best thing to do is go to dslreports.com etc and look at peoples connection speeds in your area, as well as which carrier since that affects it too.

It really depends on where you live.

If cable is popular in your neighborhood, it can be slow. If you live far away from your phone company's CO, DSL can be slow.

Checking out DSL Reports would be a good place to start. It has information sorted by region and service (DSL services, as well as cable (counter to what the site's name would lead you to believe)). Users also report their experiences with companies/services they've dealt with.

edit: damn you, charliex. damn you to hell.

Yeah, it is completely dependent on where you live. Moskie said it best.

Cable if you live in a medium sized town or small city. DSL if you live in a large city.

Usually DSL is more expensive than Cable modem, however, almost always you have to have some type of cable tv service to get cable modem access.

Actually I think at least with my provider you can get only cable internet.

Don't forget you need a landline phone to have DSL, too. I don't have a phone at home, so cable is cheaper for me. Really wish they would upgrade the upload speed from the paltry 128kbps it is now, though.

I definitely agree with the others who have mentioned this: DSLreports.com is the bible when it comes to this stuff.

I have cable and live in a medium to small sized city and it's working quite well. There used to be lots of problems with it when it was new here, but they eventually got them all ironed out and haven't had much a problem since that time. You also may consider how long a cable or DSL provider has been around.

For the Metro Detroit area, its cable all the way. I'm a big believer in big bandwidth, and Comcast just doubled their bandwidth for consumers without a charge increase. I've got an (albeit theoretical) maximum of 3Mbps now and couldn't be happier.

The DSL providers are currently trying to compete by slashing prices. Cable companies are competing by adding bandwidth. Just pick what's more important to you.

I live by Halx and my cable service rocks! I pull down close to 3Mbit on any given day. I never got better than 1.5 Mbit with DSL

Cable. Someone correct me if I am wrong but the RIAA can't tap a cable line like it can a DSL line from Verizon, etc.

That's a complete myth, but the RIAA couldn't do that even if it was possible, it'd be highly illegal. They're just a big company.

There isn't a better between cable and DSL. Most cable is capped to be the same speed as DSL for the same price. DSL usually isn't full-duplex, so if you start uploading a lot, you can't download as fast, but that's true with all of TCP/IP(what you're using to view this message).

Just looks at plans in your area.

Unfortunately, RIAA does have legal authority. They began as a lobbying arm of the recording industry but The Digital Millennium Copyright Act enpowered the RIAA to prosecute and litigate the general populace. So, yes they can wiretap.

Not without a federaly approved wiretap notice they can't. the DMCA may be on there side, but if we were smart we would do what Nullsoft tried and make the WASTE network a reality for the masses. Encryption is good... as long as we use PGP protection when the RIAA cracks said protection to prosecute us they've broken the DMCA they cherish so much, and as such can be sued in a federal court :P

Cable is far superior to DSL...the cap on DSL is pretty pathetic considering the prices for both are about the same. I've never seen any slow-downs due to "too many users online" or something like that. I am also on a 3 computer lan, and never see a slow down.

calbe is far better to DSL only problem with cable in my area is its more expensive and they cap our bandwidth. so if i go over 10 gigs a month it costs me $20 a gig. turns out that sucks in this day and age since there is so much background noise in the internet nowadays i lost 3 gigs a month in shit i didn't ask for. just ping sweeps and virus scanns that pummell my computer added up to so much bandwidth i had to change up to a DSL provider that had unlimited bandwidth.

I've had both Cable and DSL, and the DSL has been faster, as well as cheaper.
I paid $40 a month for Comcast Cable, while I'm paying $29.95 a month for SBC DSL.

Oh and SBC doesnt rat you out to the RIAA.
