Ok, who keeps changing my homepage?!

Ok, who keeps changing my homepage?!

When I turn my computer on I get this as the homepage – http://www.find4u.net/
instead of www.yahoo.com. Its easy to change back in IE Tools-options –etc…

But if I leave my computer on – it now is a pop-up porn site as my home page.

Anyone know a site where I can find out how to fix this?

www.lavasoftusa.com Download addaware, update it and run it. That'll help cleanse your system :)

ninety09 12-06-2003 07:40 AM

You should also download spybot. Everybody should use these two little programs

sailor 12-06-2003 07:59 AM

Yep. Good advice. Those two programs will fix 85% of all Windows problems :)

Pragma 12-06-2003 10:56 AM

Another one you will want to try:

BHOCop. I don't remember if AdAware & Spybot get rid of BHOs, which are incredibly annoying plugin-type-things for IE. Give it a shot, see if you turn up anything.

Evil Milkman 12-06-2003 11:54 AM

Definitely, what all these people have said. I used to get tons of pop-ups out of nowhere and my homepage would change constantly. Now it's fixed after using Spybot and Ad Aware. :) Awesome programs.

laconic1 12-06-2003 01:46 PM

We need to make one of these Spybot/Adaware threads a sticky. Very useful tools to have that fix a lot of problems.

charliex 12-06-2003 03:42 PM

actually i think a FAQ for a lot of the questions that repeat would be cool

bryan2766 12-06-2003 04:32 PM

There is also an option in spybot where you can disable your homepage from being changed.

You can try two programs (CoolWebShredder and HijackThis) in the link below to possibly rid of your problem. Try CoolWebShredder first, then HijackThis)

http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads.php?cat=all#s-p

CoolWebShredder/CWShredder

A small utility for removing CoolWebSearch (aka CoolWwwSearch, YouFindAll, White-Pages.ws and a dozen other names). Spybot S&D tends to forget essential parts of the hijack, so until it updates, you can just this to completely remove the hijack. Updated to remove the new variants once they come out.

HijackThis

A general homepage hijackers detector and remover. Initially based on the article Hijacked!, but expanded with almost a dozen other checks against hijacker tricks. It is continually updated to detect and remove new hijacks. It does not target specific programs/URLs, just the methods used by hijackers to force you onto their sites. As a result, false positives are imminent and unless you are sure what you're doing, you should always consult with knowledgable folks (e.g. the forums) before deleting anything.

Mr. Mojo 12-07-2003 06:51 AM

well i installed, these and they all found and deleted some stuff:
- www.lavasoftusa.com Download addaware,

- spybot

- BHOCop

but the main problem is still there...
everytime i turn my computer on i have 3 new Porn Pop-ups in my Favorites. if i leave my computer on for few minutes with out touching anything, i get dozens of pop-ups...

*and when i try to shut down, i get a windows box that says program <b>Win Min</b> is not responding.

* when i try to go to www.google.com - i get this http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en&edition=us&q=

if i type in google i get - http://www2.google.com/ and a popup for 'Find 4U'

Thanks for all your help.

I've had this problem too. My homepage is now www.search-space.com I've never heard of this site!

Make it go away!!!!

I've done ths spybot and adaware stuff. It hasn't fixed the problem.

Retardo 12-07-2003 03:00 PM

Try this site... http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/

It checks your browser for parasites. Pretty useful. I check once a month.

Averett 12-08-2003 06:55 AM

*bump*

Any more ideas?

I haven't tried the link you posted, Retardo. My computer was running incredibly slow last night so I didn't even want to bother.

I have used the following and it seems to work quite well. Unfortunately it is not free. That is what pisses me off the most about the Internet.

I have to buy a Virus scanner, a Pop-Up killer and a PestPatrol so I can surf safely on the Internet.

Along with this homepage problem, I also can't click on links. Like every link that is posted on here, when I click on it to open it up it just freezes the page.

I don't know what is going on with this :(

Averett, give the two programs I listed a try, especially CoolWebShredder. I have used CoolWebShredder before to rid of my homepage redirecting.

Just google the programs if you are having trouble clicking the links.

Averett 12-09-2003 04:14 AM

It looks like that worked!!! When I ran that this was the result:

Done!
Removed from your system:
- CWS.Qttasks
- 3 infected IE registry values

Windows XP (5.01.2600 SP1)
CWShredder v1.39.2

Things seem to be working smoothly now. Thanks!! :)

Why don't you try to actually go into your "Add/Remove Programs" control panel and look for suspicious stuff there? That's how I recently got rid of one of those things. Turns out it was a "toolbar" that some asshat website self-installed on my copy of IE.

Modo 12-09-2003 01:40 PM

I'd suggest after you get your computer cleaned up with SpyBot, AdAware and HighJack This look at StartPage Guard. It's free and I've used it for a year or so. It locks your home page in and won't let any trojan or malware change it. <br>http://www.webattack.com/get/startpageguard.html

I did that. There was nothing to indicate something was up.

Also search for a program called loader.exe. This was plaguing a friend's system. Deleted and all worries went away.
