Monitor Recomendations

I currently have a samsung 19" 950b monitor. Id like to upgrade it to something a bit higher quality. The 950b isnt flat screen.

It does max of 1600x1200@67hz and i run it at 1024x768@85hz. I absolutely cant stand ~75hz. So i want a higher resolution, at a higher refresh rate. 85hz is a must.

I need a 19" monitor that does

1. 1280x1024 @ 85hz
2. Flat screen
3. Around 400-450 CDN ( So 280-300ish US) after taxes

What do you guys recommend?

Not Viewsonic or Viewmaster. I have an AOC flatscreen 17" it does 1280 at 85 and 1600 at 75.. seems good quality... dunno what other ppl think of AOC
Philips are known for making decent monitors.

What's wrong with Viewsonic? I've been nothing but pleased with my Viewsonic CRT. Of course, if by flatscreen you mean LCD then I have no idea about that.

i don't have any specific model recommendations, but i can tell ya what i think of these different brands, take it for what it's worth:

Samsung makes a great monitor, and their quality control seems to be top-notch. I've had my own Samsung CRT at home for 4 years, 1024x768@85Hz and it's still perfectly calibrated and looks just like it was new.

I had a lab with tons of Viewsonic and CTX monitors, and both brands seemed to stink, didn't last very long at all. After a few years there's very few units that still have a decent picture and/or are not dead. But if you only plan on keeping a monitor for a year or 2 they might be OK.

I consider AOC to be the budget brand, and might even give you the most bang for your buck if you think you're gonna upgrade in a year or so anyway. They tend to be cheaper and may be worth it.

Those are just my own experiences.....

I've got a Viewsonic 17". Bought it in 2001 or 2000. Can't remember. To turn it on with the computer already running, you have to turn it on, then when the monitor "clicks" it's display on, nothing comes up, and u have to quickly turn it off and then turn it on. When res changes in some games, exact same problem - doesn't display, have to turn off/turn on quikly.
Sony is overpriced rubbish.

After using an E700 Cromaclear for a while I've been spoiled colour and clarity wise. The best thing you can do is look at your friend's monitors and take a trip down to Staples or Future Shop.

Look at them for yourself, I find that monitor preference is extremely subjective.

i know i could easily do that, but just because something has the nicest picture, doesnt neccessarily mean its the best buy. This monitor has to last me 3+ yrs at least.

im just looking for first hand expereince,

Why not look at a 17" LCD, there around the same size as a 19" CRT (a 17" LCD Is actually 17"s whereas a 19" CRT Is usually 18" viewable) You wont need to worry about refresh rate, can find a cheap one now for under $480cdn and most of the new ones have a <16ms Response time so gaming isn't an issue. Worth a look anyway.

I have a 22" NEC Multisync and I love every inch of it. I paid about $300 for one that has been used for 1 year. The damn thing ways 75 lbs. but the picture quality is amazing and I haven't had any problems with it for about a year now. Here's where I got it:
