* Click the START button and find the control panel under "All Programs" or run the control panel the way your normally would.
* Click on the "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" icon.
* Click on the Hardware tab, and highlight (click on) VIDEO CODECS.
* Click the Properties button, and then select the PROPERTIES TAB to view your installed codecs.
* Double click a codec to see its corresponding properties. If a particular codec has any options that can be customized, you will see these options when you double click the codec name.
* NOTES: I know this is very rudimentary, but it's intention is merely to alert people to the fact that they can view their installed codecs in Windows XP without playing the guessing game.
* Another point worth mentioning is that you can also check your installed MP3 and other audio codecs in the same area of your control panel. In fact, you can actually prioritize your MP3 decoder choices according to your personal tastes.

Would anyone else mind sharing which codecs they have?

I need to know what is standard and delete the extraneous stuff.

"I need to know what is standard and delete the extraneous stuff."

why do you want to delete any codecs? that just limits your ability to watch video clips. you see, the problem is that there is no "standard". there are literally dozens of audio and video codecs out there, and every seems to have differing personal preferences. my attitude toward codecs is to get every one I can get my hands on. whenever I discover a new one, I get it. As a result, I almost never come across a clip I cant watch.

quick check on my system shows over 2 dozen video codecs and 14 audio.

gimme more, I say.

I can't watch some movies cause apparently another codec interferes with one of mine.

Thanks.
