CSS problem...

I have been working on my website, but I am having a problem with some of the CSS.. this is the first time I have used CSS on a site, so I am not sure how to trouble shoot it.. I am trying to make a link that when you click on it, it displays a background image (mine is of a check) in the visited state, but i can never seem to make the background image show up. here is my code: (in the site i just have a div with the id set as sidebar, then the a href link)

css:

#sidebar a:link {
font-weight:normal;
text-transform:none;
text-align: center;
}
#sidebar a:hover {
font-weight:bold;
text-transform:none;
text-align: center;
}
#sidebar a:visited {
font-weight:normal;
text-transform:none;
text-align: center;
background: url(gifs/check.gif);
background-position: 100px;
background-repeat: no-repeat;

My knowledge of css is pretty basic, but maybe few questions to rule out some possibilities:

Do any properties in the 'visited' state take effect? Is it just the background value that's not working right?

Try using check.gif as the background for the other states as a test. Is it working there as you expect?

*shrug* I've been learning css myself recently, these are probably the ideas I'd try first.

I just checked and found that the other parts of the visited state take effect.. from what I can tell this problem is with using background image on text in other states (i can get it to work with static text)

*edit*

bleh, I put some suggestions, but I'm gonna test them out first. If they turn out useful, i'll put em back....

ok, i just did some differnt things and I found that when you set the image to repeat, it will show up, but if you set it to x or y repeat, its not there again.. very frustrating..

what are you using to test?

im using IE 5 mac, safari mac, and IE 6 pc.. It is actualy working in safari, but its really more importiant to me that it works on IE for the pc..

based on what you typed, you might want to make your visited state read:

background-image: url(gifs/check.gif); <-- just make sure that path is correct!

and add to the other states:

background-image: none;

and close off that last css code with a " } "

that's just looking at your code, i didn't test that. you could try to upload the css file or have this <a href="http://www.htmlhelp.org/tools/csscheck/" target="_blank">css validator</a> check your site.
