IE 6.05, Pop-Up Ad Blocking to Debut in Windows XP SP2
http://www.winnetmag.com/Article/Art...785/40785.html
You won't need to wait for Longhorn in late 2005 to get pop-up ad blocking in Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE). Microsoft will release IE 6.05 as part of Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), which is due in the first half of 2004. Whether IE 6.05 will include some of the other new IE features, such as the new download manager, found in the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference (PDC) 2003 Longhorn build is unclear. But pop-up ad blocking is definitely among the changes we can expect, as are other new security features such as more locked-down Internet security zones. |

The problem with this isnt that there are other, better alternatives, but that there would no longer be a good reason for non-techie people to switch to a different browser. The biggest way I have gotten people to switch is by telling them that Moz/Firebird/Opera blocks popups. Once MS starts offering this feature, there will be no reason for them to switch. Sure, there are tons of other reasons for computer people to switch, but your average person doesnt care about the other benefits--they will just stick to what they know now that it blocks popups: IE.
Not to say that this is the end of third party browsers, but it would make it much more difficult to get non-techie people to switch.

My regret, as a Firebird user, is that since 95% of users stil have popups in IE, popups still exist. Once IE blocks popups, the ad agencies will have to come up with even more intrusive ad technologies.
I don't block regular ads or even flash ads, even though I know how, because I know that web pages need advertizing money. I draw the line at popups.

I hear ya redlemon, the hordes of idiots still using IE allow us to get away with cool stuff without pissing off the advertisers.
What I wonder is will it be easily turned of so the majority will find the option (Apple sticks it in the application menu wtih prefs & quit, it's hard to miss) or will it be stuff down in the abyss that is IE's pref system never to be found by mere mortals. only time will tell... |

I really don't think the majority of the users on this forum (Myself included) appreciate being called an idiot just because we use Internet Explorer. Would you like It if someone called you an Idiot for no other reason than the fact that you use a Mac. And If you had bothered to look at the screen captures I posted In this thread. http://www.boomspeed.com/damon559/LH3.JPG http://tfproject.org/tfp/showthread....threadid=34552 You would have seen the answer to your question. |

my personal reaction on seeing that first screenshot showing the tools menu is disgust; both at the integration with that deplorable windows media player and the horribly cartoonish default XP look that I always kill immediately.
but never mind me, I have nothing against people using IE if it works for them. Personally I won't touch it (or very likely even have it available at all when I reinstall) and do wish more people used a more standards compliant browser that uses the presto or gecko engine.

I've done it before I'll do it again, I can't say enough how much I love firebird, I encourage everybody to go check it out. You won't understand how inadequate IE is until you try something different.
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firebird/ It's free, it's more stable than IE, it's already got built in pop up blocking, it's fast, built in search bar, fully customizable with skins and software extentions check it out, get converted.
