about 1 in 5 times i turn on my computer, it hangs during post, saying overclocking failed. it does this if it is actually o.c.'ed or not.

i have already replaced the power supply with a 550w, replaced the motherboard (asus p4p800dlx) and ram (currently generic pc2100). still using old p4 1.8

on my old p4b, it would power up ok, but give me a post error "system failed due to overclocking" or something like that.

on the new mobo, when i press the power on button, it lights up for about a second, then turns itself off, and i need to switch off the power supply to reset it. then it will turn on, give me the post error, and send me to the bios settings. even if i don't change anything in bios, it will boot fine after that.

ok so... the possibilities i come up with include: bad processor, bad video card (i have had problems with it) or dodgy power in my apartment. i'm really interested in what people think, especially whether fluctuating or dirty power could be causing problems. in which case i guess the thing to do would be to get a UPS or something??

find the clear CMOS jumper on your mboard and clear it first in case its a bios problem

choose "load fail safe defaults" if you can on your bios

check to make sure its not being Oc'ed by jumpers

did you oc and blow somthing?

I have an Asus A7N8X Deluxe. It's a great board but it produces interesting POST messages. I may get any of the following:

Keyboard or mouse failed
Memory failed
CPU fan failed

In each case the keyboard and mouse were attached, however my KVMP switch throws it off every so often. Memory is OK and I"m watching the CPU fan spins it's litle gears off.

I recently updated the firmware in the hope some of these bogus messages go away. In your case, try a BIOS update and load the default settings.

You may be right about the power. Try attaching a UPS which includes a power conditioner (not sure if all do this).

i have updated the bios since purchasing to 1010 which i'm led to believe is the latest stable version.

i don't suspect a bios problem, but might fiddle with that. i also have a different video card i could throw in, but i'm pretty sure i swapped for that one with my old mobo and still had this problem.

thanks for the input! would still be interested in opinions...

oh, and there are precious few jumpers on this board compared to the p4b i had. none of which seem to be relevant to o.c.ing, so it's probably not a jumper. plus i keep tabs on it with sandra, cpu-z, etc so i know what the speeds are
