Best Pop-Up Stopper......

Ok so my girlfriend keeps getting all these pop-ups on her computer and she has no clue why. She'll get somewhere between 5 and 8 at a time and sometimes so many that it'll freeze her computer up. I was wondering what is the best way to get rid of them. She shares her computer with her 12 year old sister and I don't think her little sister needs to see adds advertising penis enlargement and free porn, know what I mean. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks Yall.

well, first of all, run Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. That should clean up the spyware that is on the computer for the most part.

As far as stopping pop-ups from visiting webpages, I just use Mozilla. Nothing better than when it's built into the browser.

ASNstunta 10-17-2003 10:50 PM

Im running popup stopper. Its free and works great.

Moskie 10-18-2003 02:13 AM

I got my girlfriend to start using Opera. She swears by it now, and can't live without the gestures (not to mention, no pop-ups). Plus, there's plenty of... *ahem*... "pretty" skins for girls to like ;)

I simply use the new Google tool bar, and it has a built in pop-up stopper that works extremely well for me.

JBX 10-18-2003 05:49 AM

I like Pop-Up Stopper

agreed

sailor 10-18-2003 07:52 AM

Best way? Run Mozilla Firebird. No popups anymore, and a much better browser than IE anyways.

What she has sounds like spyware though. Are they popping up when no browser window is open? If so, they are spyware. Like others suggested, download and run Adware. That should get rid of them.

cliche 10-18-2003 08:54 AM

Run Ad-Aware, and MyIE2 (or firebird, whatever takes your fancy). That'll stop 'em!

tekaweni 10-18-2003 10:17 AM

Like Baldrick I use the Google's taskbar. It catches everything, not another app to load, and lets you allow certain sites to popup if you need to.

I like small and simple :-)

Opera is my first choice; I do really love those mouse gestures and they do not feel quite right in Mozilla. Moz is a very capable backup in my opinion as long I am not downloading something with it.

Ditto no prob's with popup stopper !!!!

devnull 10-19-2003 07:42 AM

When I am forced to use Internet Explorer, I use the Google-Bar. Other than, I solely use Mozilla Firebird, their stand-a-lone web browser (doesn't have the other email and newsreader built in). Between the two of these programs, I never get pop-ups that I don't want to see.

I am a big fan of Meaya Pop-up stopper. works really well. Use that with a bi-monthly routine of an Ad-aware scan and that should help.

yes! tiny filesize, and a great program. (check out the rest of his stuff too, this guy is awesome)

damił 10-24-2003 03:30 AM

google bar works fine, other option is crazy browser, a freeware web browser that uses the same engine IE uses, with a very good popup stopper build in - available here

scavengertype 10-24-2003 12:56 PM

I have Google at work, and Zero Popup at home. Both work great.

mikec 10-25-2003 10:08 AM

like many said already, google toolbar rocks.

I use that in conjunction with EMS free surfer http://www.kolumbus.fi/eero.muhonen/FS/Support.htm and no pop ups get through!

jfranco13 10-26-2003 10:56 PM

I use the google toolbar, which really works well. Also Netscape 7 has a built-in popup stopper (since they share much with Mozilla) and it works really well, plus unlike N6, it actually works with most pages :)

cradeg 10-27-2003 06:49 AM

like alot people here already said : Google Toobar :)

lakefire 10-27-2003 04:19 PM

MOZILLA FIREBIRD

it is the by far greatest thing since sliced bread.

b1naryb0r1s 10-27-2003 05:03 PM

just started to use google toolbar popup stopper. Let's see how this baby works!

Snakebyt 10-28-2003 12:40 AM

i use google toolbar 2.0.. couldnt live without it

darksynth 10-28-2003 12:29 PM

If Firebird/Mozilla dont stop the popups, then dont forget to disable the Microsoft Messanger in windows xp. Its an un-needed service that microsoft turns on by default, for some unknown reason.

monkeysofthebut 10-28-2003 02:58 PM

i like google toolbar

Aesik 10-28-2003 04:29 PM

I personally uses Opera and have absolutely no issues with popups at all. My wife refuses to abandon IE, but is using the google tool bar with great success.

Bowlcut 10-28-2003 04:41 PM

FIREBIRD if you dont need a mail client

I agree with mozilla, but Spybot is the better choice now for spyware detection

weasel519 10-29-2003 12:30 PM

I'd reccomend the google toolbar w/ popupblocker

Intangible 10-30-2003 01:04 PM

Im running the Google Toolbar with popup blocker, and so far, none have gotten through. My friend uses the Analog-X POW!, and claims its very good. I also use Mozilla and MyIE2, which are all great. No complaints about any.

niccoli 10-30-2003 08:41 PM

The google toolbar is great! not only does it block popups but I can search google anytime I want w/o having to go there.

Sunrise 10-31-2003 09:49 PM

Google toolbar and MyIE2 are regarded as the best at popup stopping - superior to mozilla.

bassd00d 10-31-2003 10:20 PM

Another one for Google toolbar!

ZoneAlarm also has a popup blocker

joefish 11-01-2003 09:56 PM

popupcop 2.0!
