Everything you can do with cable you can do with T1. That goes the same with dial up except considerably slower.

When my parents got cable at home I was going to download everything...I didn't download much at all. Some demos or patches to test my max speeds and that sort. Movies are definently an area that was uncharted territory for those on dial up (think star wars kid remixes). Mostly I just played online games and laughed at all the people on dial up. Yes, I laughed at em the day that I got rid of dial up.

Now I am at college and sometimes downloads reach a megabyte a second. Nothing has really changed other than downloading (illegal) games/movies is easier.

I am thinking about setting up a server here to play games and/or host a website/ftp. If you had cable before than there wont be much change.

get a good firewall 'cause you're gonna have a permanent IP address that peeps can hammer at will because it will always be there.

Well, a T1 is only 1.544MBit, so you don't have unlimited bandwidth, but it is quite decent (theoretical max download speed of 197.632 KBytes/sec).

It'd work fairly well for running a server of some kind, as you've got guaranteed bandwidth. Beyond that, the sky is the limit.

speaking of decent connections, thinking of upgrading to a business DSL line when I can afford $40 more a month on the phone bill - would bump my speeds from 768/128 to 1.5MB/384.
that higher DSL speed would be far more useful to me than a cell phone.

If I had a T1 line, I'd be broadcasting radio to a shoutcast server on one of my colo boxes so everyone can hear my funky taste in music

With a T1...you might be able to set up a picture hosting thing for your TFP buddies...

T1 is nice, but I saw that back home in Sweden you can now get 26mbps up and down for $40/month.
It is VDSL (ASAM-platform, DMT-based VDSL) wich is a development of ADSL. The modem you get, Alcatel Speedtouch 610 supports 58mbps for the future.

Wow, that rocks. Can't wait until I move back and get it. You can NEVER get enough!

Once upon a time...

maybe you should look into mirroring a server you like... to help them with their bandwidth bill

Main benefit of a T1 over cable is that your bandwidth is symetric, so it's a good choice if you want to host servers out of your home.

hehe i do live broadcasts from home to my friends box for his radio station at nullsoft...if i had a t1 i could broadcast at a higher bitrate. for some reason the crap latency on my "1 megabit" dsl doesnt like me broadcasting at 160k

music has the power to bring people together

/me wonders what kind of music Halx listens to
