My cable modem has been uncapped!
I have Charter cable and I pay for the 768/128 service. I've had it for about a year now and it's always been rock solid at the speeds I'm paying for.
For some reason the past 3 days I've been downloading at 3 Mbs instead of just 768 Kbs. The upload is still the same at 128, but DAMN my download is fast. Don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining. I just find it odd that I've suddenly had the cap taken off. I don't want to call them and ask about it for fear that it's just a glitch and they'll fix it. ;) Has this happened to any of you guys? |
No, but I fucking wish it would happen to me. That would be great!
|
The news is that TWC has been upgrading their speed and other companies are following.. read it at broadbandreports.com :)
|
I have 3MB downloads now, too...but I pay for it...:-)
Wide Open West offers this service...:-) I just love those guys...:-) |
earthlink here, and yes the other day we were upped to 3 Mb down
|
The funny thing is. All of my Friends are on Charter and their bandwidth is the same as ever. I'm just lucky I guess. :)
|
Comcast is reportedly working on a 3MB upgrade as well. I can"t wait.
|
You know, I never really thought I would care about having more that a 768 down connnection. That always seemed like plenty of bandwidth to me. Now that I've been downloading 60 meg files in about 2-3 mins, and I see what a difference it makes, I'm tickled to death.
I just wish they'd give me a little more upload. 128 is painfully slow. Also, it's kind of cool to have to wait on the server because you have such a fat pipe they can't keep up. :) |
God of Thunder:
Comcast has already upped the bandwith in some area's, here in pittsburgh we're seeing 3000/256 (2700+/200+) on a daily basis. Apparently Comcast is thinking about doing this for their whole customer list by April of 2004. Notice they've still ignored the requests to fix routing, and packet loss between the nodes and the consumers. |
3 Mbps? That's like what, a 300 kilobyte/second download? Have had that for over a year on Road runner, basic service... always thought that was just the standard...
|
Not quite....

Gotenks: I think GOT and I are on the west coast (well, I know I am...I think). I can say for sure, though, that my own connection is about as average as it has ever been. I imagine Comcast will up their speed, then begin upping their billing, too. *sigh*
|
I've noticed that Optimum Online is raising their cap also. But I'm paying $44.95/month for it. However, I'm addicted..I could never go back to dialup again.
I just went to Broadband reports and did a speed test and I got 670.3 KB/sec = 5491 kbps. It's never been that high before ! |
3Mbps = 3 megaBits not megaBytes...
|
God, I wish Bellsouth would go to 3Mbps!
|
I've been on with roadrunner for 5-6 years now. I still have my original pre-DOCSIS modem. The fastest pre-cap download I ever had - with a witness - was a 2.5mb file in about 5 seconds, at 469 kbytes/sec...even now in the age of DOCSIS and governors and caps...my connection is still faster than my next-door neighbor's...
|
Charter here as well, I'm showing a download speed of about 3.8 megs here as well, 2 friends also in my area got bumped up as well
|
I have the silver package of Charter Pipeline (not usre on the speed) but i just clocked myself (using broadbandreports.com) at 2315 kbps. Upload is the same however, but that is a 286kb/sec transfer rate.....awesome.

:(
verizon dsl blows |
You'd be surprised how stupid some dsl/cable companies are. I had free cable for a year because I was somehow lost in their billing system. I called them atleast a dozen times for tech support only to be told i wasn't a customer, finally I was sick of down time and called them and told them I WANTED to pay(sign up) and they said I wasn't eligible. Go figure.

wow.... Go figure you're all speeding up while my DSL is slowing down....
We called them to fix it, and apparently we have extra wires taht need to be removed.. What? So they broke into our house when no one was home to install extra wires, so they could take them out? yeah right, especially since a neighbor on the other other end of the neighborhood is having the same slowdown issues. You sped, up Verizon slowed down... erg. |
Wanted to thank peeps for posting that broadband report.
I had no real clue why my DSL was a little slower than my friend's who lives in the same town. It turns out after tweaking that RWIN value from 4288, to 5840, then to 8760 I had the following results. RWIN 4288 217kbps down, 320kbps up RWIN 5840 415kbps down, 340kbps up RWIN 8760 628kbps down, 330kbps up Advertised as 700kbps down, 300kbps up. I really suggest people check out that broadband reports website, and run those tests. I had no idea that changing the RWIN value would have such a difference. Going to test around with this some to see if these numbers are noticeable in practical use. |
Optimum online here is 10Mbit/1.5Mbit.....i've downloaded from edu dumps at 1.16MB/s!!!!!
|
I got this in the mail yesterday: http://www.charter.com/thankyou/

The first day we had DSL in my hometown, we were one of the first customers that had it. Me and my brother downloaded at about 1-16 MBps. Ha ha, my brother downloaded a porn movie 3 times in a row to make sure it was going at 16 megs per second, and it was. I tried it on the other end of the hub and it worked as well.
Unfortunately, the DSL in our area is now capped at about 150 kBps down. Blah. Oh well, beats the hell out of dial-up. Here at ASU we have around 300kBps-1.5 MBps average down. Going from ASU to DSL is like going from DSL to dial-up. It takes some getting used to! -Lasereth |
I'm fine with my Optimum Online :)
Has been working great since the first day I got it. |

Where a large group of architects colaborating, so the typical file sizes where passing are 1GB renders at actual scale. Costs us all (each) 200.00US per three months. Cheap when you think about it. Only 10.00 more than DSL in Providence. |

3Mbps, or three mega-bits per second is, 3,000,000 bits per second. So, dividing this by 8, because there are 8-bits per byte, gives us: 375,000 bytes. Since there are 1,000 bytes per kilobyte, that's 375 kilobytes/second. Or if you wanna get all technical and say there are 1,024 bytes per kilo, it comes out to be about 366 kilobytes/second. |
Dude, I just got an email from Adelphia today saying that they're upgrading my service from 3Mbit to 24Mbit!!! That's gonna be HAULIN' ASS when that happens!
|
Never had this happen but once I got free cable for almost a year... we canceled our subscription and they came and unhooked one of our 2 TVs and forgot to do mine. LOL. Then the cable company sold out to Charter and one day it just ended. No one ever asked us about it.
|
I get ADSL in a week. I have had 56k for far too long.
Huzzah. |
I have optonline as well, and thu a 8011.b and a Usb reciver, I STILL get 3500kbps .......
My father, who has it direct on his comp, always scores in the 9300-9999 range.... Its nice. Yup it is. |
Comcast just did that about a month ago here. It's amazingly fast, and it was pretty fast to begin with.
|
Comcast just changed their speed to 3000Kb/s. Pretty nice though nonetheless.

I said, "Yes, please!" |
i have Comcast and I used to be capped at 200KB/s, but lately I've been able to download steadily at 395-400KB/s. Its great!

Your download speed : 3103770 bps, or 3031 kbps. A 378.8 KB/sec transfer rate. Your upload speed : 233576 bps, or 228 kbps. I love my 3mb/256k cable connection from charter |
I'm spoiled, my ISP cogeco is capped at 5Mbps/640Kbps on their standard package ($41.95 CAD a month bundled with basic cable TV). For $66.95/month I could have 10Mbps down/1Mbps up. Almost $70/month on internet is way too much for me to spend though.
I'll be very sad if I ever have to switch to another ISP, cogeco has been a perfect ISP for about 4 years now. Great tech support, near perfect uptime and soft download caps have spoiled me. I  Cogeco! |
Whoops! Hit quote instead of quickedit

I had Charter in MI before I moved. I also paid for 768, but got 3mbs free all of a sudden.
Soon after I discovered the speed increase, I got a letter from Charter that said: Hi! We just finished upgrading our service in your area and are giving all customers the "benefit" of our fastest service for the next six months. Did you get a letter? |
optimum rocks!! I have nothing but positive things to say about their service....from the cable modem to digital cable, they are one bill I don't mind paying every month!
|
Seems the national standard is now 3Mbs, with a few rarities.
Adelphia has been 3Mbit for about a year in my area, which was actually stepped down. :( When I first joined adelphia I got 8-9Mbit, then down to 5Mbit, and finally they have officially stated 3Mbit. But they did increase us to 256Kbit upload. :) |
