Playstation 2 Headset Stopped Working...Cheap Way out?

So my ps2 headset stopped being able to work well.. I think its the earpiece because the games recognize the fact that its plug in and let me "talk" its only, the headset doesnt work , now the way it works is headset with mic has wire, wire runs to box, usb out of box

can I buy a cheapo normal phone headset, cut the "old headset" wire and just crimp it/wire it in to the "wire going into the box" ?

Or do I have to drop $35 on a new headset?

the cheap non ps2 headsets dont work with most games so you'll probably have to buy a new one unless you want to be crafty.... go to the dollar store and buy some head phones and do some splicing and see if you can fix it like that
