winXP upgrade
I have win2000 pro, and I'm going upgrade to winXP. Does anyone know if I buy the winXP upgrade and I want to install it onto my win2000 system can the upgrade CD do a clean install where I format the HD's and everything or can it only upgrade the existing OS keeping all the old files and everything?

You should be able to do a clean install. During the install it will ask you to put your Win2k cd into the drive to verify that you have a quliafying upgrade OS.
|
You can do either. I reckon a clean slate is the was to go. A fresh install of an OS is always much better that an upgrade. You will be able to use your Win2k CD as an upgrade reference.

Do a clean install - reduces potential headaches with upgrades

yep, I've heard a lot of horror stories about problems from upgrading. I've always done clean installs, so I could avoid those problems.

Be careful of a clean slate as some upgrade CDs are not bootable. You might want to go to bootdisk.com and make the 1 disk XP boot disk just in case your CD isn't bootable.
I formatted my hard drive and then couldn't boot from the CD so I had to make the disk at work. What a pain. |
I'm curious as to why you're "upgrading" to Windows XP. Are you having stability/incompatibilty issues with Wndows 2000 Pro? If so, what hardware/software are you running that is having the problems. In my experiences, Windows 2000 has been great, and XP offered nothing that warranted spending more money. Please tell me if I'm incorrect in my thinking.

I agree with you firebirdta, win2000 is great. I wish I didn't have to switch to XP but one really big thing I want this computer to do is video editiing, and the new premiere 7.0 requires XP.
I've been really happy with 2000, and otherwise I wouldn't be switching. -happymaan |
