Web hosting -- who do you like?

I'm looking for a web hosting service.
There are hundreds out there, of course,
but they all look fine on the surface, and
one can't tell the good and bad ones apart.

Who have you worked with that you'd
recommend?

I don't need tons of storage or bandwidth.
I do need unlimited POP accounts (or at
least a large number). I do need private
CGI space and perl. I'd rather not exceed
$60/year.

Looking forward to your recommendations.

I use www.One2Host.com . Back when I first got them, they sucked. Lots of downtime. This was when their servers were based in the UK. Right at a year ago, they migrated their servers to the US, and since, my site has been down maybe one or two times and for no longer than a couple hours.

A buddy of mine uses www.DreamHost.com and seems to be happy with it.

www.icdsoft.com works for me mainly because it's super cheap. Downloads don't go very fast, but you don't get more bang for the buck ANYWHERE else. Customer support is top-notch - these people don't blow you off.

Decent price/bandwidth/tools.

Plus they have a blue haired hottie as their mascot.

I see some of these guys have a 5 gb bandwidth limit. Have any of you who are hosted with a company like that ever ran out of bandwidth? I know 5 gb is a lot, but if your site is popular, I'd worry about running out.

I have run out on my site. During it's busiest, I hit almost 20 gigs in a month. Luckily my host was cool and I advertised for them so they gave me a warning and gave me some time to figure out who was leaching my bwidth.

I just use Yahoo Webhosting. It's expensive, but you get a lot of good stuff, and it's perfect for someone that doesn't have as much time writing his or her own scripts.

I like the guys at mediatemple, they host a lot of big name accounts and have oodles of bandwidth and the knowledge to keep it running

Dreamhost rocks!

If you do any sort of PHP/MySQL development, www.phpwebhosting.com is the perfect host. You get pop3 accounts (which you can admin remotely with qmailadmin), mysql databases (which you can add and admin yourself), and ssh access upon request. I've had essentially no problem with these guys, and they are very quick to respond to tech requests.

Thanks again, all.

I went with one of your recommendations,
and so far things have gone smoothly.
Once I have the site up and some actual
experience with their service, I'll say which
one.

Appreciate the many prompt replies!

I've been looking into the same realm, and I think with the # of features and cost, I'm going to go with Lunarpages.com. As long as they support Cron jobs, I'm there. Check them out, especially for a small $7.77 usd/mo.

Just my .02.

www.aplus.net.....10 bucks a month, 200 mb space and unlimited transfer.....

TwoToTango 09-17-2003 11:18 AM

I went with Sledge's recommendation,
ICDSoft .

$60/year, more space and bandwidth than
I'll need, 1,000 POP3 accounts, private CGI
directory, PHP, perl, database, etc. etc.

I've now had some experience with their
tech support people. Filed a trouble ticket,
got a detailed answer in less time than it
took me to check my e-mail -- call it seven
minutes or less -- and it was not only prompt,
it was correct.

Got some PHP pages cooking already, am
enjoying the web stats (I've been crawled
by Alta Vista already :) )... quite satisfied
overall.

[No doubt some of the other places you kind
folks suggested would also be good.]

Thanks again!
