Covering Your Tracks on a Network
Greetings Folks,
I work at a semi-small office with one server computer and I think about 15 other comps in everyone's offices. I have traveled around the internet once or twice and I know the importance of clearing history and all that, plus I have HistoryKill AND Windows Washer on my personal computer so I know that no one is going to figure out where I have been searching. However I heard that if you are on a network that the server computer will keep a record of everything you do despite what you do to your personal computer. I have full access to the server computer and it is just running NT, nothing fancy, and I was wondering: What files should I delete on the server computer to ensure my personal privacy? (Thanks in advance and any suggestions are welcome and I will try and answer any specific questions) EDIT: Incase this matters the server computer has C, D, E, F, and G Drives |
well it depends on the function of the server. If the server is used for connection logging then you would want to get rid of those log files but in doing this you might also delete the logs of all the other users. I am not to familiar with exchange so I would not be sure how to clean up e-mail records but I think that when you delete it from outlook that it deletes it on the server but I am not very sure about that.

server ?
if it is a file server nothing is stored there what you dont put there :)
do you use a proxy server ? check out your browser if there is one , if there is .. all what you have done is logged there :( i would guess from the descripten you gave me the 1 server will be a file server with internetsharing of some kind , so you have to be sure to look for the programm that allows the entrance to the www , if this programm tracks stuff then you should look in the www for more info where are the tracks are stored by this programm. maybe you have more info ? :) |
Well I looked through the server files and it seems to mostly just be backed up stuff and stuff that people have downloaded, and also all the printer profiles. I don't go through a proxy server to connect to the internet. And if I go on the server computer it is just WinNT and I can use internet explorer, is that what you mean by program that allows entrance to www??
Is there anything I can search for that would be of help? |
simple, don't do anything at work you don't want anyone else to possibly see. That is the surefire way to protect your privacy.

If the internet connection goes via the server (proxying or similar) you need the server logs. If there's a firewall/NAT setup, you need those logs. If you just have a dumb router with NAT, there probably aren't any logs unless someone's deliberately sniffing and logging packets so you should be OK.
If there's a problem, you can always run your connection via an open proxy on the internet so the only connection in the logs is the connection to the proxy... |
Don't surf porn at work.
