making a linux boot disk?

I'm starting out with http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ The first step, of course, is to partition your drive. The only boot disks I can find are either booting to install a package (like Red Hat), and it only partitions as you install the package... the other boot disks just boot off the kernal located on the HD. Knoppix doesn't seem to boot off this (older) computer.

What's the easiest way to setup a boot disk (without having linux already installed on my "patient") where I can just drop to console and run some partitioning software (like fdisk or disk druid)?

http://www.toms.net/rb/

That should help you out :)

Yes, Tom's RB rules.

I built a LFS system last year. I ended up using two drives and building under RedHat.

boner sounds like he has the right Idea to me, I would try to build the low level bits while you had another linux distro running on a diffrent partition. Then when you have it booting just deleate the partition with the distro on it.

DOS' fdisk doesn't work well w/ partitioning linux file formats. Though I guess I could have used 3d party partitioning software for DOS.

I figured there was a linux install for a floppy. Thanks guys!! This is exactly what I was looking for.

The odd thing is, the windows version requied an acutal DOS environment =/ I guess I could have downloaded the img.bz2 file... but I guess it was easier to find DOS than to find something to uncompress the bz2 file.

If I hit another snag, I'm prolly gunna do what boner said.

Thanks again all!
