I have a Sharp LL-T17A3-H, which is excellent and was one of the cheapest when I bought it (I'm in the UK so prices might be different)

Try the Planar PX171M - 17”
Has one of the fastest response times of any consumer 17"

you want a fast response time if you are going to be watching dvds on your computer. otherwise the lcd will not handle fast action correctly.

Planar is an excellent company.

i'm loving my dell 1800fp. it's an 18" lcd that accepts both dvi and dsub. this means you can hook two computers to it and press a button to switch sources. i got it for $350 a few months ago.

check out dell's refurbished outlet: http://outlet.dell.com/

The Dell 1800FP is a good monitor. I have 4 of them, and they have good refresh rates, which means I don't get headaches when playing FPS games. However, they have a non-standard pixel orientation, which means that ClearType in Windows gets messed up. That can be fixed using Microsoft's ClearType tool on the web (google "ClearType").

For a good 17" monitor, the new Samsung LCDs work great. But since most 17" monitors are 1280x1024 natively, you might find that unless you have really good vision the screen may be a bit small for your taste.
