first of all you need to specify a port number

ftp://68.115.10.149:21

i believe thats how an ftp in Ie or other browsers work

and youll also need a username and pas at the beginning

ftp://someone: password@68.115.10.149:21
or something along those lines im sure others can correct me

no space between the : and password though the TFP board thinks im putting a : P smiley when i leave the space in

DEI37 08-03-2003 03:46 PM

It allows anonymous logins, so the username and password shouldn't be an issue. I haven't changed the FTP port from it's default of 21, so wouldn't it be OK? I don't know, I'm just asking. I know it works internally here, but I'm making sure that it works outside of my Intranet.
I guess my real question is, did you actually click on the FTP link, and if so, what were the results?

Pragma 08-03-2003 03:50 PM

Well, by default FTP goes to port 21, and by default it uses anonymous as the username, which doesn't *REALLY* require a password (most browsers use your e-mail address as the password, which is the "standard" for anonymous users.).

So, in short, his link would function as it stands. If the server was up. Which it doesn't seem to be.

DEI37 08-03-2003 03:59 PM

Uh-oh...that's not good. I can access it via CuteFTP...but again, this is internally. It claims to be running, and if I put up a picture from the http side of things, it will come up. Let's see if that works this time.

You keep on saying "internally". So you're behind some kind of a router or whatever. Are you forwarding the ports to let the traffic through?

DEI37 08-03-2003 04:12 PM

Yes, I have the router set to forward requests from ports 21 & 80 to the server. Did the pic show up in the last post?

The_Dude 08-03-2003 04:52 PM

no, the pic didnt show up for me.

and i couldnt log on anonymously.

DEI37 08-03-2003 04:55 PM

Hmm, this is goofy...try again...I changed a couple things.

The_Dude 08-03-2003 04:59 PM

nope.

same result.

Pragma 08-03-2003 05:03 PM

Same as The_Dude, no luck on either the picture or the FTP server.

DEI37 08-03-2003 05:06 PM

Weird...I just did a port scan, and while ports 21 & 80 are wide open, they come back not only as closed, but in stealth mode. I figure the port scan is inaccurate, because when I've tried this before, I could get nothing, and now I'm getting somewhere...using the exact same test methods. And, like I mentioned, neither of those two ports can get opened up any more than they already are!

The_Dude 08-03-2003 05:08 PM

did u disable firewall or anything else like that.

and as for the router, try hookin up directly to the modem.

DEI37 08-03-2003 05:14 PM

There...router bypassed...any luck now?

The_Dude 08-03-2003 05:21 PM

still not

DEI37 08-03-2003 05:24 PM

Alright, then, what am I doing wrong? Yes, I know it's a general question, without a lot of info. But this is retarded. I remember doing this a while back, and coming to the conclusion that running an FTP or HTTP server from one's home is an impossibility. Then I found a couple more settings to futz with, and tried 'em. Still, no dice. I am starting to come to that conclusion once again.

Pragma 08-03-2003 05:32 PM

Well, one possibility is that your cable/DSL company doesn't want you running a server, so they block the ports for you.

Since you mentioned "stealth mode", I can only assume that you went to GRC.com's port scanner - keep in mind that it's hideously inaccurate. I once took a wide-open OpenBSD box running a half dozen "well known" services (HTTP, FTP, DNS) to get scanned by it and was told that it was locked up tighter than a nun's pussy.

Try running the webserver at a nonstandard port (oh, say, 4520 to pick a random number by hitting a few keys on the numpad). Then point us at that, see if that works.

DEI37 08-03-2003 05:36 PM

OK, try ftp://68.115.10.149:1065

Never mind...doesn't like that, either.

The_Dude 08-03-2003 05:41 PM

DEI37 08-03-2003 05:44 PM

Yeah, that's what I got. I'll deal with it later...I'm getting the idea that this kind of thing isn't possible...again. Does anybody here use Charter, and run adn FTP or website?
