I'm running Win Xp Pro. On the network. How do share thing with a password like i did in Win 98? I only have two options. Share with full control or read only. Thanks.

Go into windows explorer, tools-folder options. Pick the view tab. Look for an option called "enable simple file sharing (recommended)" and uncheck it. Then you can do what you want.

In XP, goto start, then goto "my netwrok places" (different versions might call it "network"), pick a drive, click on sharing. Follow the instructions. I am feeling silly right now. But, I would not lie. Pick your drive, allow sharing, then do your network stuff.

I still don't get this. I turned simple file sharing off and got a whole lot of new options...but now how do I set a password on a folder? For example, if someone tries to gain network access to my 'uni work' folder, I want them to have to type in a password. How do I make it so?

Why not set up a new guest account and limit access under file sharing.

In XP you cannot password protect folders unless you compress them first.

To do this, open My Documents, click File, Create new folder. Once created, left click on the New Folder. Click on File, Add to archive. Then follow directions and set your options / password, etc...Once finished, you can just drag and drop files into that folder and they will be password protected.

Or, if you have multiple user accounts, right click a folder, sharing and security, general, advanced. Click encrypt contents to secure data. The folder name will display different color now. Only your user account can now access this folder.

In XP, you have to actually specify a user and account with access to the folder, that's the equivalent of a "blanket" guest account.

Just create an account in the "Guest" group, only give them read access to that folder you want to share, set a password on the account, and then share it.

Yeah those are the only ways of doing it. 2000 pro has that feature though.

Of course this will give you multiple user accounts, which is just clutter if you don't need them. Just my 2 cents, though. Good luck.

Set up a single guest account, deny "logon local" access in the "Local Security Policy", and set up your shared folders to use that account.

Least security risk possible that way, and having an extra user account or two isn't unreasonable clutter - on any standalone/workgrouped server, that's to be expected. Far better than "Everyone - Full Access"

OK, here's where I am:
-I created a new account, 'user', with a password.
-I set the permissions on a folder so that user only had read access.
-I tried to access that folder on a Win98 pooter
-Win98 pooter said that the folder was not accessible.

What am I doing wrong?

I tried the Guest account, but I can't set a password on that.

Your XP computer probably uses NTFS formatted partitions which wouldn't be recognized by Win98.
