Problem getting a game to run (in here because it's a comp. problem, not a game prob)

Stats:(yes, display from IRC, I'm lazy)

-Windows XP Professional (5.1 - 2600)
-Processor:(AMD K6/2) (450MHz) Memory:(280MB)
-Video: TNT2 32MB Resolution:(1024x768) Colors:(32bit) Frequency:(72Hz)
-HD's 40MB and 30MB Maxtors w/ pci controler
-CD's: Liteon read only, QPS R/RW

I installed Diablo II (legitimate copy, valid key) and in order to play, I have to put the play disc in the burner, wait for the popup that says the cd isn't there, switch to install isk, wait for the message again, then take that out and put the play disk in teh other cd drive. When I load it, it runs at a much lower framerate than before, and instead of battle.net, the box says "server.fsgs.net"

I've tried everything, from simple to hard, and 6 formats and countless installations later, still the same problem. Ideally, I'd get a new Motherboard and a new HD, which I need anway, because this board is nearly fried, but I'm befuddled. It used to work on this computer.

Any ideas at all?

Call Blizzard, there are some really quirky issues with some of their games that have weird solutions. With WC3 I had to turn my onboard soundcard acceleration from full to some other setting. Those guys are always willing to help if you're willing to wait on the line. gl.

I've had similiar problems with D2. I'm thinking that it's a bad disk (original, not a copy).

I too had\ have problems with diablo 2 originals disks.
the disks wouldnt read 100% in either cd rom I have writer or reader.

I think its the built in copy protection int he form of errors that screws the pooch, you can try using a cd copying program like alcohol 120% or blindwrite which copy the entire disc errors and all perhaps the resulting copy will be more friendly to your drives.

The copy protection they have has issues being read by certain CD/DVD writers, IIRC, but I can't remember any problems with a read-only drive.

Has Blizzard told you anything? You might want to contact them....

I asked Blizzard for help, their tech support jerked me around and sent me the same damn form letter every time I told them it didn't work.
