What's the best way to rip audio from DVD?

Hi Folks,

For a few years I've ripped audio from DVD using audacity, and been happy with it.

Recently I've tried to take the audio of a couple of concert DVDs so I can listen to them on my iPod, and you know what - it's a pain in the arse. It's time consuming, and if anything causes the DVD to stutter you get dead spots that you have to edit out.

So - the thing I'd like your collective help on is this: is there a decent, free DVD audio ripper that actually works? I've googled a few and tried a couple and can't seem to find anything that actually does the job.

Therefore I'm after personal recommendation of stuff you've actually tried.

Thanks in advance.

I haven't looked, but have you tried sourceforge yet?

You could do it in a fairly simple 2-step process with DVD Decrypter and Super.

Open DVD Decrypter and choose your dvd location. Then under "mode" chose "ifo". Then go to tools/settings and chose the "ifo mode" tab. Go to where it says "file splitting" and chose "by chapter". Click ok. Now in the main window go to where it says "stream processing" in the upper right hand corner. Coose "enable stream processing". Deselect everything except your audio track. Make sure "demux" is selected. Now click the dvd icon in the lower left corner. It will give you a ".vob" file (or files) that contains only the audio track.

Open up Super and drag and drop the .vob file(s) to the area at the bottom. Now go to the top left corner where it says "select output container" and choose aac or mp3. Then in the middle, where it says "audio" choose what birate you want. Then right click and choose "output file saving management" to choose the output directory. Then just click "encode active files" at the bottom, and you should be good to go.

Hopefully my instructions were ok enough, and let me know if I can clarify anything.

I don't think handbrake allows for audio only.

Thanks for this, I'll give it a try.

Hi - never realised you'd posted this, sorry.

Well, it worked, but now I have a new PC, and so needed to reload the software. Thought is was the perfect time to search out this thread and remind anyone else of this method.
