copy VHS to dvd

I just bought a new RCA dual vhs to dvd machine which works fine for my own tapes from tv. My problem is when copying movie vhs (about 30 of them) which won't copy (pops up with "video is copy protected".
Any way of getting around this? Some of these tapes are 10-12 years old and i'm afraid they may get outdated and break the tapes.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I have a Canopus, which has a secret mode for bypassing the copy protection. I don't remember what it is, but I saw it while googling.

Are these tapes super-rare? Anything on VHS is pretty low quality once you digitize it. You would probably get a better looking copy through torrents (this is also illegal, so I didn't actually suggest it).

Also, why make DVDs? I'm archiving a bunch of my old videotape performances to file, and when I want to watch them, transfer them to the TiVo. I don't think homeburned DVDs have a great shelf life.

Well, that doesn't sound like a suspiciously ham-handed spambot at all...

No, not at all. :shakehead:

Clever, though.
