No Sharing or Security Tab

Tried searching through past posts and google to find information on this, but have had no luck.

I'm trying to set up file sharing on my computer (Windows XP Pro) so that another user (XP Home) on the local network through a router can get some of my files.

I've enabled client for Ms networks, and file and printer sharing for my network setting. I can't enable ICS.. there isn't even an option.. I don't know why.

Also, when I right click any folder.. there is Never a "Sharing and Security" tab. If I go to its properties there is a Security tab but no sharing tab.

Any ideas what I must not be doing right?

Thanks.

ok for xp pro, i am not too sure about home, open up explorer or my computer. Go to tools menu->view tab and at the very bottom should be use simple sharing or something like that. Just turn simple sharing off and you should get the security and sharing tabs.

good luck :)

open up explorer.
right-click on the folder ye want to share.
hit "Properties"
there should be a tab called "Sharing"

from here ye should be able to figure it out.

xp wants ye to put yer shares into the Shared Folder or some jazz like that. *shrug*

There isn't a Sharing tab, and Simple Sharing is off but still no luck. :*-(

I think your problem is XP home, it doesnt work well with others.

Maybe try to use the IIS FTP server builtin to XP pro to transfer the files?

I still am not able to get the Sharing and Security tab on my XP -Pro- computer. I just don't know what to do.. frustrating..thanks for ideas so far.

I'm not as familiar with XP Pro as I am with W2K Pro, but I believe that XP still has the default Administrative shares. For example the C: Drive would be c$. So you could try using this share to make a connection. I do know that XP Home does not have any way to connect to a domain and do some of the networking I am used to. I understand it will handle some P2P stuff OK. So it would probably be easier to go from the XP Pro to the XP Home system using the built in shares.

Yeah. I had to go into the Computer Management and add the folder specifically as a share before I could see the sharing and security tab. I could have sworn those had shown up before though and I had never done such a thing.

The only way to get XP to share an IC is to run the networking stup wizard. By now, you should be able to figure out which options you need. (basicly a walkthrough) Its very easy, but also different for every user.

Try that, and let us know......

One more thing to check (not sure if you've gotten it all working yet or not) is to make sure that the drives are formatted as NTFS. If they're FAT32, Windows can't do all of the advanced file permissions that it likes (which might explain the lack of a Security tab).

As for Sharing, do what the above people said and make sure that "Simple File Sharing" is disabled. Good luck.

It's been said, but disabling Simple File Sharing should do it.

All the stupid wizards in XP is why all 4 of my computers are running Win2K Pro at home and my laptop. At least now I can configure the network my way, on the fly, without being asked alot of questions about settings I don't care about....sorry, finished venting now. After working with this program since before it was released (Xp Pro and XP Server-that never worked correctly!) it left a bad taste in my mouth.

Now where is that wizard that tells me how to raise the toilet seat, never mind that's my wife

This may be a given, but you should be logged in as an administrator as well.
