Favorite Screensavers

Ok, another thread here made me think about which screensavers do most of you guys use or do you just let the screen blank and not even worry about screen savers?

i know when I am in linux I usually just let the screen blank.. I really don't care about screensavers, although in windows I typically enjoy having something to distract me for a little bit.

my favorite screensaver thus far (and one my girlfriend absolutely adores) is Fireflies (http://somewhere.fscked.org/fireflies/)

it basically just has a bunch of OpenGL diamonds flying around erratically, sometimes forming groups, othertimes just being a loner. This screensaver comes in almost any flavor (unix, MacOSX, and windows).

theguyondacouch 07-15-2003 10:16 AM

I just have folding @home running full screen when I'm not useing the comp.

ATI's Gargoyle Clock. Takes a mean card to use.

Picture Folder ;)

Gets every picutre in the folder and sub folders currently 1.5 gigs, and zooms in/out crossfades all the pictures together. 99.9% is porn. :D

sixate 07-15-2003 05:00 PM

I've never used a screensaver. I hate the damn things for some reason. I just have my monitor shut off after 20 minutes.

soopafreek 07-15-2003 07:10 PM

this one is really cool.... hypnotic too.
<a href="http://beamscreensaver.com/">www.beamscreensaver.com</a>
it's got a trial period.... if you really like it, like i do, consider buying it.... 12 bucks.... but definitely worth a look.... seriously.

Speed_Gibson 07-15-2003 10:42 PM

My only screensaver is a blank screen and both of my main monitors go to sleep mode after 15-20 minutes

steveincolumbus 07-15-2003 10:56 PM

Well until i saw this thread i wasn't useing a screensaver but now am useing Helios its really cool and so is all of the ones on http://www.reallyslick.com/ thanks charliex

yakimushi 07-16-2003 09:16 AM

Blank screen, saves a lot of power. Thats important with dual 19" monitors!

charliex 07-16-2003 11:09 AM

welcome, i recoded helios to take advantage of faster cpus/gfx cards, basically a few opts + the sliders can go up to 11!!

http://www.cutemonkeys.com/helios.zip i havent tested outside my own systems, PM me if you get problems.

its only for nutty graphics cards, though it works on my laptop just fine ;)

umm helps putting the right link :) i blame flashget myself

sweeze 07-16-2003 08:35 PM

i like most of the ones at http://reallyslick.com (lattice is sweeeeeeet), plus a bunch of the ones in xscreensaver. gotta love cows on trampolines! and sproingies, it's like marble madness meets q*bert!

MacGnG 07-17-2003 02:14 PM

"plain black" makes my comp fall asleep faster

sunstone 07-24-2003 06:18 PM

I use Maya Paint Effects. It's a free demo from the company that does a lot of animation software. It's got an infinite combination of settings and produces some really cool artwork. I first heard about it a couple of years ago in an article in Video Producer -- I guess it's still available on their website.

Monitors shut off after 5 minutes. They're both LCD's, so they come back very quickly.

macmanmike6100 07-24-2003 07:50 PM

although I've been doing SETI@home since 1999, AfterDark's Flying Toasters (and AfterDark overall) will <b>always</b> hold that special place in my heart.

XXXs 07-25-2003 06:01 PM

I use SereneScene's aquarium.

TwoToTango 07-29-2003 06:08 AM

Ditto sunstone on Maya Paint Effects.
I use these settings:

Preset 1 = jellyPlant2.mel
Force 1 = random selection
Preset 2 = none
Force 2 = none
Background = dark
Depth = on
Speed = about 1/3 from the left
Randomize preset = all the way left
Clear time = about 1/10 from the left

Sometimes it's so pretty I wait before
getting back to work.

Pennington 07-29-2003 10:22 AM

Sceen savers waste power, imo. If you're going to be away long enough to warrent a screensaver going on, you're away long enough to turn off your monitor or put it in sleep.

Bastard screensavers are killing the planet.

shay 07-29-2003 10:29 AM

i use uncle willie's screensaver from http://www.wilwheaton.net

Stare At The Sun 07-29-2003 11:46 PM

Seriously, everyone, everyone i say, should use seti's screensaver, it actually has a point to it! plus it looks pimp too. reminds me of a star trek interface..:)

The.Lunatic 07-30-2003 12:16 AM

Wow sick screen savers, almost makes me want to use one :D

I dont think i have a screen saver if i do its blank screen.

Exodus 07-30-2003 01:39 AM

SETI@HOME is kinda cool. I figure my machines gonna be on anyway, why not let it work for something interesting while Im away?

Zooksport2 07-30-2003 02:51 AM

Rarely use them, but if I do, its a series of my own pics

charliex 07-30-2003 03:40 AM

i set my savers to turn on after 5 or 10 minutes, then go blank after 20, but if they shut down every 15-20 minutes it'd be insanity, plus i primarily have LCDs where the screens don't use that much power in the first place. For CRTs it does prevent burn in which is the primary reason for them ( and yes burn in still happens on CRTS ) it sorta happens on LCDs too but its nearly always correctable on them, not so with CRT's, especially for people who run their screens bright

far2bored 07-31-2003 11:33 AM

I used to use a picture of a Blue Screen of Death. Just use a blank screen now that I've moved to the command line version of SETI.

egorey 07-31-2003 09:48 PM

another vote for blank screen.

I did see a cool Sponge Bob Square Pants ss at a customer site today though.. may have to find it.

sunstone 08-17-2003 09:26 AM

Thanks, TwoToTango -- I tried your settings ......... great !! Best thing about Maya is there are an infinite number of design options. You can never get bored with it ....... and it even makes you feel artistically creative!

Empty_One 08-17-2003 09:36 AM

blank screen all the way. At work, I use webshots, with a bunch of chicago bears pics. It really pisses off the guys up here in Milwaukee. ;D

Hanabal 08-17-2003 12:35 PM

if your using seti, you have to go blank screen, it goes about 50(truelly) times faster. No comparison. But for some reason, on every computer ive owned the sreensaver has almost always crashed on me, no matter what it is.so i have none at the mo, I must have some screensaver hex on me or something

Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and -
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's "one" louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
Marty DiBergi: I don't know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [Pause] ....these go to eleven.

So what does this have to do with a clock?

MrHilter 08-20-2003 01:48 AM

You ever wanted scrolling matrix text on your desktiop? Then ZMatrix is for you. You can run it on your desktop as you use, or you can have it just as your screensaver.

It's

bundy 08-20-2003 06:34 AM

i used to have SETI@home, but these days i just have magma balls.

^dude 08-20-2003 06:57 AM

I've had my matrix code screen saver for ages, it never gets old :D.

Voodoo Lights... no longer posted anywhere I can find

charliex 08-20-2003 09:12 PM

search tfp for voodoo lights

stonegrody 08-06-2004 08:47 AM

I use Helio, very slick. One problem though: I have a dual monitor setup. The screensaver runs on one screen while the other one just sits on the desktop. I can't find a way for it to run through both screens. Has anyone been able to figure out how to do that? It would be neat if something like Firefly could go across both screens. I'm thinking if I set up my screen to "span" mode it might do this but I really don't like that mode. Reading an email across two screens isn't very cool.

* I let the screensaver run for about 10 minutes and then I have both monitors go into powersave mode.
