Did you pay for Photoshop?

Im just curious about this coz Ive used Photoshop for years & so have alot of my friends. As far as I know it costs a bundle but I dont even know anyone who paid for it. I just did a search & its all over Kazaa too so I guess Im hardly the only one. So did you pay?

Thanks for your time.

Daval 07-10-2003 11:26 AM

i got mine free with my printer I think. or something like that - anyhow I got a free one.

SiN 07-10-2003 11:28 AM

<-- going straight to hell :)

however, i WOULD, and i WILL when i can afford it.

:D

rockogre 07-10-2003 11:28 AM

I don't even have PhotoShop, I use Micrografx and Picture Publisher. (It's all kind of old but works well)

Phaenx 07-10-2003 11:35 AM

Making funny pictures isn't worth the 200 or so dollars they want to charge you. Even so, I paid, with the laughter of a child, the most precious gift anyone could give!

Infinite Hybrid 07-10-2003 11:42 AM

Before I didn't, but I'm saving up to buy it for school though.

G_Whiz 07-10-2003 12:55 PM

First, I didn't vote in the poll because I don't have Photoshop.

Photoshop would be nice to have since it is the "standard" for those types of programs. But the reality is that I don't have enough use for it to even justify getting it for free.

I did get my wife Photoshop Elements for Christmas to handle the pictures she takes with her Digital Camera. But that still isn't really Photoshop.

Note: Since the option was added to say that I "don't have Photoshop", I added my vote.

bermuDa 07-10-2003 01:10 PM

if it's software piracy alone that condemns my eternal soul, I'll be surprised.

hotdogg 07-10-2003 01:18 PM

Have Photoshop and image maker from Adobe...Split the cost of about $700.00 with three othe users...Better than any Dark room you ever had!

Photoshop? Not Photoshop Elements or something else?

What printer that's a killer deal.

Phaenx man if it was $200 alot more people would buy it I bet, no, it costs $600.

As for myself, yeah I have a beta copy of 7, hell it just expired so if I want to use it I have to roll back my clock. But I almost never use it and just fuck around with filters, as for resizing I can just use iPhoto or GraphicConverter (both free to me).

But being a broke ass college student who will never make any money off PS work I feal no guilt.

*Nikki* 07-10-2003 02:18 PM

I didn't realize you had to purchase it.;)

SecretMethod70 07-10-2003 02:35 PM

don't have it...

www.gimp.org

The Bolshevist 07-10-2003 02:44 PM

I use photoimpression 4...came free with my 'puter.

sixate 07-10-2003 03:05 PM

I have it. didn't pay. Won't pay.
Actually, I don't have a legit program on my PC.

meanSpleen 07-10-2003 03:14 PM

There is a free version that comes with certain systems/printers. I think it is Photoshop LE. LE = Limited Edition.

Thats how I got my version. It is crippled, so if you really want to enjoy the full whatever of photoshop, you do not want the LE version.

Vanquish 07-10-2003 03:24 PM

I had to buy Photoshop, running a business with pirated software is not a very good situition to be in.

Stan 07-10-2003 04:46 PM

I don't run a business of any kind, so I didn't purchase it. I do have some tight connections with several release groups. I haven't used any P2P program since Napster.

The_Dude 07-10-2003 07:11 PM

i dont have it in the first place.

i DID have it, and i didnt pay for that copy.

i use paint shop pro and i didnt pay for it.

longjohns 07-10-2003 07:31 PM

got ps elements free with my wacom tablet

merkerguitars 07-10-2003 09:43 PM

Didn't pay for it...but if I could afford it I would buy it....I like adobe products......

GremlinDelirium 07-10-2003 10:04 PM

I have the 'free' copy in zip on cd... but haven't installed it or used it on my computer... does that mean i am doing something illegal?

Kyp 07-10-2003 10:49 PM

Lesse, $700, of free? Free sounds like the better deal to me. I can't afford $700 and even if I could I wouldn't dish it out for a program that I very rarely use.

losfp 07-11-2003 12:32 AM

I'll happily pay for any software I use in a business situation. I've got no moral issues with pirating for personal use though - in fact if I like the program I often suggest at work that we buy it! :)

denton 07-11-2003 12:45 AM

Have it for free, don't really use it (too much time to learn it).
I paid for the computer and the cable internet access, I can't afford any more.

sub zero 07-11-2003 12:48 AM

I use photoshop 7

HECK NO I DIDN'T PAY FOR THAT!

...i'm slooowly trying to move to the gimp so I'll feel less guilty.

ps: i use photoshop like every day

bodypainter 07-11-2003 02:27 AM

I bought it back around version 2 and paid for upgrades through version 5. Still use version 5 though and doubt I'll upgrade it any more (not enough bang for the buck).

LNCPapa 07-11-2003 02:38 AM

Job buys me pretty much all the software I need - I simply have to ask for it. I even have Maya 5 Ulimited because of the job. Guess it kinda helps that my boss is in charge of licensing and software purchases where I work.

merkdr 07-11-2003 03:11 AM

same as sixate, only short and bald

Reese 07-11-2003 05:23 AM

Ebay! I've seen it for about 75$ a few times. It's probably someone selling their retail copy while they keep the backup but I still don't feel as guilty about it that way :) The only problem is that it might take a while to get a good deal on it.

TwoToTango 07-11-2003 05:53 AM

better damn well believe I've paid for
every piece of software I use.

That is why I made the switch. It sucks sometimes, but what can you do.

I had an illigal copy (still have technically but it is not installed). Right now I am about 100% above board on software. I bought a thing from www.serif.com caled Photoplus. The best way to describe it is that it is like a 1 rev back of Photoshop. It has EVERYTHING that photoshop 6 has which is really nice. It is very powerful, and the interface is identical.

You can get a free trial from www.download.com that is older, but after you DL it, sometimes they will contact you (make sure you register it) to offer you a full version for only $9.95!!!!!! That is what I got at least.

oscar0308 07-11-2003 06:36 AM

nope. i dont have the money to pay for every piece of software i use recreationally. if i was to use it professionally, i would definitely pay for it. actually, when i graduated college i bought it, autocad, and 3dmax for about $500 total. they give real good deals to students and i was toying with the idea of getting into computer generated architectural representations (i have a degree in architecture) and thought it would be worth having. i kept upgrading PS until win95 came out and when they charged me $100 to upgrade to a version that supposed would work and didnt and then offered a X.1 that would work for an additional $100, i said 'cya'.

diergray 07-11-2003 07:24 AM

Work bought it for me but I did buy Premiere with my own money. Bought are worth the price of admission. I believe Adobe has a really good educational discount. To those still in school you may want to ask at the school bookstore.

Jack Ruby 07-11-2003 11:17 AM

No I did not. I do have morals, but they're not worth $ 500 :)

Krycheck 07-11-2003 12:08 PM

I'm getting frequent flyer milage to hell ;)

rubicon 07-11-2003 12:25 PM

I paid a $100 to someone on eBay for a number of Adobe products. They said they were licensed. Well, they weren't. The dude was busted and Adobe sent me an email saying the products weren't legit but have fun (<- my words, not theirs).

However, I have a legit copy of Photoshop 4 that I could upgrade for $150. I probably will when I get my laptop.

domokong 07-11-2003 12:41 PM

what's this thing called paying? ;)

laconic1 07-11-2003 04:46 PM

I don't have it, for what little image work I do the GIMP works just fine.

crewsor 07-11-2003 05:49 PM

If it was 50.00 I would pay. For what it costs I would never buy it. I do have it though.

tikki 07-11-2003 06:24 PM

GraphicConverter for me. I only resize shit to post on message boards for the most part.

Xirax 07-11-2003 07:33 PM

The Gimp works well enough for my needs.

Got mine that way. Well, not really. My dad bought a digital camera and a printer that both came with it. He got one copy, I got the other. :)

Speed_Gibson 07-14-2003 02:18 AM

I have PS 6 and 7 - no comments on the source for those; but the Gimp works for just about everything for me.

I was a using a pirated copy of Sound Forge 5 but I made sure I paid for a registered copy of SF 6 when I needed a copy that actually worked and had proper support (I use sound forge daily and PS/Gimp very rarely)

brandon11983 07-14-2003 06:19 AM

Didn't pay. Won't pay. I also have very little legit software on my PC. $700 is too much for what I use it for.

/\/\etalhea|) 07-15-2003 04:52 PM

I was shopping around for the latest PS version, 8 I think? I wanna use that "heal" filter, that's supposedly what everyone uses to make those mega-airbrushed pics we see everyday on the titty board. However, I read somewhere that it has some sort of copy protevtion that requires you to register over the internet before you can use it, so it'll rat you out if you copy it. Can anyone confirm this? Anyone know another place to get that airbrush effect?

MacGnG 07-15-2003 06:37 PM

i didn't but i know people who did so its ok lol

billcollins 07-15-2003 07:58 PM

Im waiting for the day I can click the yes button on that poll. Ive been using it for years, but now that i finished college I will buy it after I find a job and upgrade my computer.

Xixox 07-16-2003 02:30 AM

Not Photoshop, but Paint Shop Pro 7. Bought and paid for.

And well worth it :)

Fire 07-16-2003 04:48 AM

No- but if they had an extraction tool that actualy WORKED i would gladly pay double that ammount.

boatguy234 07-16-2003 11:41 AM

suviko 07-16-2003 03:09 PM

Didn't pay, using it once per 2 weeks. Will pay when and if I start actually doing work (earning) with it.

Unless you bought a professional-grade printer, I can assure you that you did not get a free copy of Photoshop. Maybe you received Photoshop LE, which is a diluted version.

I think that this poll refers to Adobe Photoshop retail version, nothing else.

Yes, Adobe has silently implemeneted a "spy" feature in several new programs, including Photoshop 6 and 7, and Illustrator.

Upon installation, new Adobe software will send your name, serial number, and IP address to Adobe. This can be circumvented, however.

(juan, sorry for original post, it's cleaned up here)

Bill O'Rights 07-18-2003 08:15 PM

No, I didn't. In fact...I just installed it yesterday and have no idea in hell how to use it. Oh...and like sixate, I don't think I have a legit piece of software on this thing.

CSflim 07-19-2003 03:01 PM

wait a minute....let me get this straight... you can actually PAY MONEY for software? News to me.

It's truly a shame to hear that the "I won't pay...ever" mentality actually exists.

People work hard to write software, just like people work hard to build cars or write books, and I'm sure that the same people who steal software (and it is stealing) don't steal cars or books.

Stealing is wrong, and if you're going to do it, you shouldn't be proud to say that you do ("I don't have a legit program on my PC <smiley>").

CamaroRS1967 07-20-2003 05:11 PM

Heh, believe it or not, I bought this program for work at $80 for 7.0! I bought on this Russian website, but I am not sure what it is called. I thought it was going to be a pirated version when I saw it for $80. But it said that it was the full version, so I purchased it.
Received about 2 weeks later, and guess what....Perfectly Legit!
Score +1!

dangsta 07-22-2003 12:36 AM

i downloaded adobe photoshop and image ready 7.0 off kazaa. oh i love the internet.

anon85pd 07-22-2003 01:38 PM

damn...i make disgusting amounts of money w/ photoshop....someday i should actually pay for it. o well.

AlphaFox830 07-22-2003 02:46 PM

This brings up an intersting subject...

Most "Industry Standard" software packages are so expensive there is not a lot of people who can afford to pay for them to learn how to use them. I believe that now a days, companies are beginning to realise that if they issue a free version of their software, it will cut down on piracy. Photoshop is still an exception though. The Commercial Version costs something like $600USD. wich is a fair ammount of cash. And besides that people (myslef included) like to be able to edit their photos. I almost always have Pshop open. Granted i finally bought it this summer, but ive had a cracked version for a long time.

Programs like Avid, 3dsmax, Maya, Combustion, After Effects, and a whole lot of others are now coming out with "Learning Editions" so that the average joe citizen can learn animation or editing if they so choose.

bit of a rant.

roggers 07-22-2003 02:48 PM

hah why pay, so easy to jus DL for free!

flamingpeach 07-22-2003 03:14 PM

er...

of course I did, I pay for everything. :|

(lies, pure lies)

JJamesB2 07-22-2003 08:08 PM

Don't get me wrong, the fine people at Adobe deserve the money, Photoshop is a great product, but I don't have the money to buy it and I never plan on using it for any logo's or other pictures I am selling.

In linux GIMP is similar, but free.

dastrike 07-22-2003 08:44 PM

I do not use Adobe Photoshop.

I use The GIMP

frenik 07-23-2003 12:19 AM

I don't make money with Photoshop, not even in a remote way, so I don't think it's unethical to not pay for a $600 program that I only use maybe once a month for utterly useless things. If I ever start using it to do something I'm making money on, I'll go buy a retail version, until then I guess I'm a "pirate".

Arrow 07-23-2003 12:21 AM

i get a license free from my office. however im leaving the comany in a month, and i dont get to keep the licesnse...

cliffxpro 07-23-2003 12:27 AM

I use my pirated copy regularly. In fact, I can't remember any software I actually did pay for. As Buffet said...A Pirate Looks At 40.

bobsonite 07-23-2003 12:29 AM

Haven't paid for it *yet*, but with student edition prices being what they are I'm quickly running out of reasons not to.

Mr.Deflok 07-23-2003 12:51 AM

MSPaint 0wnZ all of j00 ph0+0$h0pp0rZ

Scrub0 07-23-2003 01:35 AM

No. :o

I am not gonna spend $1000 CDN on a program I use a few times a week to just fuck around with. I don't care if it's immoral, it's convenient.

Dang 07-23-2003 08:15 AM

All you binay pirates are going to hell.......but uh.....yeah I got it, didn't buy it..yet.

Ogre840 07-25-2003 01:56 PM

my office paid for it... dunno where to place my vote then...

well they did only buy one liscence for it... and it *somehow* ended up on my personal laptop...

ChipX86 07-25-2003 02:58 PM

Wasn't sure how to vote on this, as a long time ago, I had a pirated version of Photoshop, but not in years. Now I use the Gimp, which yeah, isn't as good as Photoshop in many ways, but gets the job done.. Especially the latest development snapshots.

Poloboy 07-25-2003 11:38 PM

I didn't pay for it, but I never use it anyway. Does that make it ok? :)
