So now that iPhone is coming to Verizon....

My January upgrade just got complicated.

Honestly, I hate Apple as a company, & the policies regarding it's software. Fact of the matter is, they still make a decent phone, they support that phone constantly and even though it's a one trick pony, because it's their only pony, they take care of you for being on that pony.

I gotta say as much as I love android as an OS, the phones are all one offs, constantly oneupping themselves with competition, complicating matters with layered OS issues that prevent a uniform OS presence, Want 2.2? well, you might be lucky, you might be stuck with a modified version of 2.1 behind HTC sense for over a year or something until they "get around" to updating it. But because companies like HTC pump out a wide range of models, they spread themselves a bit thin.

Then, tbh there is the matter of windows phones which I honestly haven't been keeping up on but the buzz is making it's way to my news feeds.

I plan on upgrading, I plan on sticking with verizon, I just literally have no idea what phone I'm going to settle on in Jan.

So.... do you have a news article for this? I mean I can't find anything about this other than the same ol' news articles talking about rumors.

I'd like this, but I think I'm getting a droid this coming janurary.

I've heard plenty of rumors, but nothing official from either Apple or Verizon. If Verizon is getting the iPhone, both companies are certainly keeping things quiet.

I really do love my Droid, and I think it a very good thing that there are multiple companies one upping each other, as it leads to variety and innovation. With the iPhone, you'd better love the iPhone because that's all you'll get; the basic design has been the same since it was release nearly three years ago. Sure it's gotten faster, but so has everyone else. With Droid, you can decide which features are important to you and go with the model that has those features. I don't see this as bad at all.

The main thing Apple has going for them is their App store. It is currently bigger, there are a few nice apps that you can't get for Android, at least not yet. I somewhat regret selling my iPod Touch because their are a few apps that I used on it that I can't find for Android. However, the iPhone has been out longer than Droid, I think given another year or two, Android will catch up.

root your phone and you can keep updating it all you want. Want 2.3 when it comes out? there's people building roms all the time.

best thing I ever did was get an android phone, after that best thing I ever did to it was root it.

All my posts over the weekend past was over my tethered wifi. I didn't need the hotel's free wifi. I had something more secure for myself.

I plan on getting an ipod touch and just using the wifi on it tethered to my phone when I need it.

The "rumors" were strong enough to support the fact, despite the announcement, luck would have it that I can post a story a mere 11 minutes old for you though..

I hope its true, but the WSJ and Fortune have reported those rumors for quite awhile, it was supposed to come out last January :( I'm just skeptical I suppose.

While I'm not a fan of Apple, they do make a solid phone, but from what I've been reading their timing of finally coming to Verizon looks to be atrocious as it seems like they might aim to hit a release window that is identical to a bunch of the new LTE phones rolling out for Verizon. And in the past how many people still wanted to buy a 2G phone once 3G phones became available? I doubt this will turn out too different but that depends on how aggressive Verizon is with rolling out the LTE network.

I'm glad that both the iPhone and Android are doing well, and hope that both continue to succeed. (My cell phone is so old, it practically has a rotary dial, but I do like my iPod Touch.)

I seem to remember hearing that Verizon was keeping their network in better shape than AT&T because Verizon includes certain governors and limiters in their system. It will be interesting to see, if true, if Verizon's network holds up with the iPhone included. (I'm sure that Jobs won't allow Verizon to limit the iPhone's operation.)

I've never noticed any governing of my data usage. My roommate has an iPhone 4 with ATT and I have a Motorola Droid and I can say that my phone constantly has faster internet connections than his does. I don't know, this area might not be the best for ATT people, at least thats what people who I know that have it say so YMMV.

As for the one upping... it's the beauty of competition and an open sourced platform. You get choice. You want a phone with a slide out keyboard? You got it. You want a phone that's cheaper? you got it. You want a phone that can do this over that? Sure! Android's fundamental principals are based upon this. Anyone can go download and use the source code for the operating system if they want... it's even fairly easily to load it onto some phones designed for windows mobile.

HTC only has one phone currently in VZW's lineup. Motorola has the X and the Droid 2 as well as a base model. It isn't that spread out. All of the main flagship phones have been updated at a fairly good pace... yes there are a few cheaper models that don't get it as fast... but hey, it is very easy to go update the software on your own. You can install different variations or 'roms' on your own... there were quite a few people who went out and installed 2.2 prior to it being released for their phones...

You would have to pay me to use an iphone :-)

And this is what Apple (and interestingly) Microsoft bank on. This is the Linux/Windows/Mac OS debate, carried over to mobile phones. I happen to be a tech geek with the skills to work on any OS I want, and frankly whatever OS on my phone that I want. At work I use Linux because it's an incredibly powerful OS and some of the tools simply work better than Microsoft or Mac OS tools.

But when I'm not at work, or even better, when I'm *paying* for something, I'm not really looking for tinkering or customizability. I want a pre-packaged 'experience' that does what I want without serious modification. Sure, there are lmitations to the iPhone OS and I have it jailbroken for the times where I must absolutely have feature X or feature Y, but the most important thing about it for me is how standard it is. Every iPhone is exactly the same in what it can support (at minimum) and it makes software development and maintenance a hell of a lot easier. Porting Android apps to 12 diferent versions of the OS is no fun, and you have a much greater risk of malicious users. iOS's protections aren't great, but they stop everyone but the most dedicated hackers from getting in. When I go to a restaurant and order a salad, I want a salad pre-made, with the lettuce washed and the ham diced and the cheeze grated. If I want to add or subtract things I can ask for it from the Chef, but I still get the same basic recipe. That's an iPhone. Android OS is the salad washed and put in a bowl, with a dozen little containers for toppings, some of which taste terrible and some taste amazing. Build what you want! .. except I'm paying you to make me a fucking salad, and I want a salad.

I like my droid incredible but one thing I do miss out on is the wide variety of hardware accessories that iphone people get.
it'd be nice if there was a bedside dock with speakers built in...that kinda thing.
the PSP Phone should be out by the time my contract is up...I may get one of those.
