Google's Nexus One phone: effin hawt.

Nexus One Phone - Feature overview & Technical specifications

Unlocked out of the gate
Open app store, no approval process required.

better touchscreen keyboard layout and predictive text isn't a one word at a time chore.
179$ w 2/yr thru tmobile or 529 straight. Verizon is getting one in Spring.
higher battery capacity, better camera, built in flash, speech 2 text voice recognition.

Yeah, I think google is taking over the world.

Being that I've never been interested in getting chained down to ATT and their prohibitive plans, this seems like the perfect candidate for my foray in to the world of smart phones.

yeah, years behind, I know, but damn I really like how this thing looks.

Might have to so see if tmobile wants to buy out my verizon contract so I can get that phone now instead of spring. We'll see.

Don't even remind me. I have a massive erection for this baby.

Can't afford it though. I splooged $300 in April for HTC Diamond. Will be at least 2 years until I switch phones.

Shauk 01-07-2010 05:37 PM

I think I could manage to soak a majority of the cost in selling individual periphials that this would replace.
I've got a 32gb Ipod Touch, flipHD and a Samsung Alias 2 phone i'd have to dump, granted I guess the video wouldn't be quite as good, it's still a nice all in one package that would pretty much free me up to sell those things and soak the cost.

Alias is selling on ebay for 135-299
Ipod is selling on ebay for 200-250
and I like my flip ultra HD but if I felt I needed to soak some more, i could get 150-200 for it.

actually the more i think about it, i'd probably keep it, nevermind ;)

Will it integrate with iTunes yet?

It plays the same formats, so being able to synch it with iTunes would be a good thing for me.

SecretMethod70 01-08-2010 12:30 AM

Apple does it's best to make syncing non-Apple devices a pain in the ass.

My AT&T contract runs out this summer... can't wait to see what the phone market looks like then!

ratbastid 01-08-2010 05:57 AM

I've got my eye on the iPhone refresh due early Summer. Depending on what's in that (and if it's available somewhere other than ATT), I'll make a call about what to bump to.

I've loved my iPhone 3G, and when you're inside the Macosphere, everything just works beautifully. That's a big selling point for me, frankly.

telekinetic 01-08-2010 07:04 AM

It's pretty cool, but if I am going to give up my G1's keyboard, I'll be holding out for a Bravo in April.

Pairing Android with Qualcomm's 1GHz Snapdragon and presenting a 3.7-inch AMOLED facade, this certainly ticks the headline boxes, and the addition of a five megapixel AF cam capable of 720p video capture gives it an extra sheen of 2010 newness. The picture above is accompanied by less solid info indicating a 1,400mAh battery, which will be joined by the mandatory WiFi, Bluetooth and MicroUSB connectivity, plus MicroSD expansion, FM radio tuner, digital compass, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

You know, it makes me laugh that FM radio reception is a selling point. What is it, 1985? "Ooh, look at me with my... radio."

Commercial radio is crap, and the NPR stuff I want to listen to, I already get in podcast form. I don't even listen to the radio much in the car anymore. Am I alone in thinking mp3 killed the radio star?

Daniel_ 01-08-2010 12:13 PM

I have had FM on every phone I've owned for at least 8 years, and never once used it.

In the car I have a Griffin iTrip which pumps my iPod to my radio, but do listen to the news on the BBC sometimes.

Clear Channel killed the radio star.

Shauk 01-08-2010 02:49 PM

hrm I guess I could understand having some sort of itunes integration for a car stereo could sway your allegiance in the phone wars but I just have a crappy stereo so no problems there :p

LoganSnake 01-08-2010 04:02 PM

I can't stand iTunes, so this is less than an issue for me. Now where to get $500.

MexicanOnABike 01-08-2010 04:49 PM

FOR THE FM: Am I the only one that has a good station set in my town? I get 2 pure playing music station and one that on off hours, plays almost pure music. off hours = not 7-9am or lunch or 5pm drive. Any other time and it's just music. I would love to have FM in my current phone!

Now this looks like a killer phone! any idea what the apps will be for it?

LoganSnake 01-08-2010 04:52 PM

It's a droid, so it has full access to Android Marketplace.

Android Market

maybe, but I pretty much jumped to the on-demand model of music the second it was available, and if I feel like letting others expose me to new music there is always online radio that I choose to use over fm,

I have a Motorola Droid, so being that it's a Google OS phone, I can say there's a literal s@#t ton of apps for it. So far (only had the phone for like two weeks) everything my friend has on his iPhone, I have available in the Android Market. The major difference in Google's mobile OS (Android) and the iPhone is that Google is open source. Meaning there "should" be more options available since they don't adhere to the strict review and approval process Apple does. That being said, because of that fact, there will be many apps that might not work as advertised.[COLOR="DarkSlateGray"]

Well, I'm still saving money. Got rid of my BlackBerry and left US Cellular and was put on a family plan so it's $10/month for the line plus the $30/month for the data plan...saving $70/month.

Shauk 01-08-2010 06:29 PM

oh one last thing, the other thing that kind of makes me lean towards the N.O. instead of droid is the fact that it's made by HTC instead of motorola.

I've never really had a good experience with any motorola phones, my samsung is pretty reliable but it's also a "dumb" phone.

LoganSnake 01-08-2010 07:17 PM

I have nothing but good things to say about Samsung and HTC phones. My two favorite phone makers.

boink 01-08-2010 08:54 PM

Lasereth's post on the Droid put me off that. the 'bar of soap' shape of the NO here is a disappointing...I really liked the HTC Hero that they got in the UK, that was nice looking imho. the NO in the pic here is different then what I saw a day or two ago...annoying hardware changes >_< otherwise I really like it.

SecretMethod70 01-08-2010 09:17 PM

I think the Palm Pre is a lot more like a bar of soap than the Nexus. The Palm Pixi looks pretty decent though.

Frankie Zee 01-08-2010 09:28 PM

I suppose it depends on what you want. I got my Motorola Droid while Verizon was doing a buy one, get one deal. You could get either a Motorola Droid for ($150) or an HTC Eris with Droid and get an HTC Eris for free (all after rebates of course). I got the Motorola and my sister got the HTC. Personally, I like the physical keyboard, which is why I went with the Motorola. This keyboard is admittedly a little ungainly and takes some getting used to. It's a large phone compared to what I'm used to and that hurts it. I still use the physical keyboard more than the virtual one; however, the virtual keyboard on this phone is imo better than the ones I've used on an iPod. I hit the right keys much more often. My sister loves her HTC from what I can tell, but so far, I'm glad I got the Motorola. It really is a solid phone. I was surprised at the weight and construction of it when I first held an actual, out of the box model. The size and weight does necessitate a need for a hip holster, though. At least for me, it did. It doesn't fit all that nicely in the pocket.

So far (after over two weeks of use) my only problems with it are the battery life and the fact that here, in the Midwest, Verizon's service is quite spotty. I will have 3G and 4 bars with it sitting on my desk and the next time I look at my phone, it says 1X and one bar. It seems like the only truly reliable service here is US Cellular. Well...I'm saving almost $70/month on a family plan with Verizon so I can deal with some spotty service...

boink 01-08-2010 09:37 PM

I mean large radius corners. I spose it's better for in your pocket but it's very iphonish to me. the UK Hero had a chin, sharper corners like the Droid, but not glossy. I almost feel like getting it but it's the $500 unlocked thing I don't like...plus I read it's functions arn't totally compatible with US networks. I'm jonesing to get on the cell phone craze but none of the hardware I ever see really gets me going.
