USB printer not working in Vista

I recently upgraded my Mac OSX to Snow Leopard, and as it happens, my model of Lexmark printer (P3150) isn't supported.

So I tried switching from my network hub to a USB connection to my Vista machine to print something.

I can't get it to work: I get a communication error.

I've tried deleting and reinstalling the printer (through the auto-setup when plugging in a USB device).
I've downloaded and installed the latest drivers.
I've deleted and reinstalled again.

Is there something in the back end I can tweak?

Why won't a USB device work fairly easily? I thought it was plug 'n' play or some shit?

Many usb devices and especially printers need, for some strange reason, to have the drivers installed prior to be connected to the computer for the first time.
I would check the support website for that printer and check if they don't have a tool to clean out a failed installation. Some manufactures actually include their tool in the driver/software kit that comes with the device.

Best of luck
