email service

Ok, the email provider I normally use (lycos) is down and it does not look like they will be up for a few days. I figured this might be the time to trade-up as it were. I was wondering what sort of email provider most of you use. If it has some sort of program that would notify me when I get e-mail that would be great. I'm trying to steer away from Hotmail and Yahoo, simply because I do not like hotmail or Yahoo.

Any suggestions?

hmmm... I like mail.com and sailormoon.com
Both of them have that notify thingee and I have used and like both. The only reason I still use hotmail is because I can add them to Outlook... my Outlook doesn't like pop3 accounts...

I use hotpop.com. It's the only service I could find that allows POP3 connection, for free. I like it, because it means I can use it from Outlook. They say they'll send you ads, but if you say you're female and not interested in anything, you won't get many. I get about 1 a month.
(I also have a student email address and one with a friend's own domain, but those are likely not options to everyone).

I mainly rely on accounts assigned to me.

I got one from my school and 2 from my parents' ISP (They dont use emails).

I also keep up yahoo! and hotmail for instant messenger options.

Hotmail gives pop3 into outlook express and it works pretty well.

I say hotmail.

Dude, hotmail doesn't do POP3. They do a HTTP server, which isn't nearly as good.

signed up for a test account there and have found it very useful at times when my domains/webhosting providers were acting up.
almost positive I have a full account ($19.95/year - know I paid for something there) but it took me a full five minutes just to remember that URL so I could be wrong.

You really ought to try out OddPost (www.oddpost.com) because they have what is probably the slickest web based email client around.

Really, it's amazing--you won't believe the features they've been able to put in there. Not only is the client great, but they have bayesian filtering for getting rid of spam, and built in blog/news aggregation. Give it a try, there's a 30 day free trial so you can see if it's worth the $30/yr.
