disabled windows messenger under services

Konichiwaneko 07-03-2003 09:23 PM

control panel > administrative tools > services >messenger > disable

This feature was meant for intranet admins, and isn't required for using your computer.

Get a Software Firewall like Zone Alarm, too. It sounds like you are plugging your cable/dsl modem directly into your computer.

Or you can remove it from your system.

Start----> Run

Put this in and reboot. Messenger will be gone forever.

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Or go to start>run>msconfig, you will see the services tab. Go from there.

Thank you all. My life just got a lot better.

Messenger in an evil piece of software - I've done all of the above things to get rid of it, yet I still get the odd message - usually when I'm playing a game online, which means the game I'm playing crashes.

toasties 07-04-2003 01:27 PM

trillian

Try using a prog called trillian. Its free and uses all the pop messenger networks all in one. what could be better?

Let me clear this up as there seems to be confusion. The original poster is NOT talking about the Microsoft Messenger program that is used for instant messaging. He is talking about the Windows Messenger Service which is something that network admins can use to send pop-up messages (not like a browser, but like a Windows dialogue box) to all the comps on the network so the administrator can say things like "network going down in 10 minutes!."

Thing is, spammers have discovered this as a wonderful exploit and simply have a program that sends messages to ranges of IPs, so that's why people would want to turn this off.

So, sixate's tip is a great one - but it's to remove Microsoft Messenger - the instant messaging program, NOT the Windows Messenger Service

Asuka{eve} 07-04-2003 01:42 PM

how do I get rid of it all?

Konichiwaneko 07-04-2003 02:07 PM

read what I wrote asuka.

You can also block a certain port with zonealarm...I forgot what exact port it was though.

o14real 07-04-2003 02:15 PM

Heyey just goto GRC.COM and download Shoot The Messenger and that will stop the pop-ups from Windows Messenger Service for good. Its just a simple program and very small download 22k, but it works!

I learned something new today. Thanks for the explanation.

Yeah. MSN Messenger and netsend are 2 different things. One is sometimes useful, the other is just fucking annoying.

Ashton 07-06-2003 03:07 PM

I have netsend disabled but still get those farking things......

Mondak 07-06-2003 03:50 PM

The firewall built into my Linksys router stops them pretty well. It is funny though - I get a whole bunch of traffic at my router even when all 5 comps in the house are off (yes I know - I have a problem). I had to connect my main computer directly to my cable modem for a day and I was KILLED by these popups.

The thing is that they are using my bandwidth sending all that crap at my connection whether I like it or not. I pay for my connection and despite the fact that I don't pay by the byte, I still feel like these spammers/ popup assholes are stealing from my. I want my whole pipe any time I want to use it. I mean there is a lot of smut out there and only so much time....

I wish I knew how to stop it entirely.

tikki 07-06-2003 04:00 PM

Wow, I did not know Spammers have taken to that direct of an approach to marketing. More and more I am glad I left the Windows platform. Being in the minority has its advantages.

spcae maggot 07-07-2003 08:31 AM

Is there any way to allow only one subnet(say 192.168.0.*) and block messages from all other IP's?

ShadowWraith 07-07-2003 09:18 AM

going into the command prompt and typing "net stop messenger" w/o the quotes works too

denton 07-11-2003 01:54 AM

I was getting HAMMERED by those grey box spam messages 3-4 times a day before someone finally told me how to disable it.
I would be listening to music, etc. and this
loud BOINK would pop in my ear when they came. Fuck those guys!

Drider_it 07-14-2003 12:53 PM

i lost 6 hardcore chars on diablo2 top end legit hard ass to find items.. die.. muwahahahaha.. thanks all for the help.. any idea who the author is .. or is it suckusoft? *chichk-chunk* (loads the spud gun)

sultanx 07-27-2003 10:29 PM

more then just a message cant be sent with the windows messanger netsnd command. If you run any kind of firewall it will stop this. If that port is open to the www imagine what else is.... oh yea and MAC's are just as easy to walk into.

07-28-2003 07:39 AM

Eh, just block UDP on port 135 at your router or software firewall and you're set.

t3m3st 07-28-2003 07:46 AM

I remember a reformat ago I would come home from work and find messenger window after messenger window waiting on my desktop window. Sometimes more than 20. And I'd deactivate it, and It reactivated itself (?!?) Wish I knew to remove it from my system. And all the messages were to stop the messages or stop popups. Sometimes there were porn adds... I remember my girl was on and got one of those... That took some explaining...

MontanaXVI 07-29-2003 10:14 AM

www.stopmessengerspam.com

checkit out

gives you a very small program to run which will kill em if you are afraid to mess with settings, but it also has the instructions to turn the messenger off itself
