Need to buy new CPU by 3/31. HELP!!!!

My old cpu finally wheezed and died. Mine was over 6 yrs old. An old Dell that held up quite well. The sales tax in los angeles jumps to 10.5% on april 1. so i got monday and tuesday to buy a new cpu.

I need something fairly basic but fast. Word, excel, the 'net, opening at least 5-6 different screns at once, NO gaming, NO heavy graphics, no editing, any of that stuff. (I'm too old and honestly gaming holds zero interest for me). My youngest, my 15 yr old, is dying for a new graphics card but tough.

I dont need a monitor, speakers, keyboard or mouse. That's all covered.

I dont have a preference as to the manufacturer.

I need a machine that is realiable and fast.

I've talked, read and read. Everybody has their own opinions on what to get. Asus motherboard, no Asus motherboard, DDR3, not DDR2, buy from tigerdirect (my personal favorite place is Newegg), etc etc etc.

Who's got a recommendation for a complete, NOT part, CPU? Please????

I think the word you're looking for is "computer," not CPU. This is a CPU:

If you need a new computer, buy a Dell Vostro. They go on sale all the time for $379 WITH a 19-22" LCD. They are plenty fast and usually have 2 GB of RAM. Go to the small business section of Dell's website and choose the cheapest Vostro they have. You won't regret it.

dworkin31, the main part of a computer system used to be referred to as the CPU. That was the case that held all the internal parts of a PC. Now, a CPU is pretty much the processor in the computer.

Anyways, I agree with Lasereth. A cheap Dell should be fine for you. Since you don't need high-end graphics you can get away pretty cheap. Just look at CPU, RAM, and hard drive space.

I picked up a Vostro 410 on sale, and I had them upgrade the video card to a gaming one.

It's a nice machine at an attractive price. I'd think the same way if I used a "normal" video card and used it for productivity.

However, it does run games quite nicely.
