Since nobody has posted a Linux Desktop, here's my Windows 7.

Just google Ubuntu...both of mine are completely stock Intrepid installs, down to the background, with the expection of an XBMC icon on one of them.

Mandriva with Gnome:

I like a minimalist desktop. Ideally with no icons at all.

The image is by our very own fnaqzna. I liked it and he licenced it Creative Commons, so I stole it.

Gnome and Xfce share the Gtk+ toolkit, so there's some cross-platform compatibility.

MPlayer is a universal media player; there are even versions available for Windows. Gnome-Mplayer is simply a gui frontend for it.

Ubuntu is a very popular noob distro. It's very slick and user friendly, but when I tried it I found that it carried over a lot of Debian's quirks (which is natural, really). I'm not a huge fan of Debian and, consequently, was not a huge fan of Ubuntu. There are aspects of it I like; Synaptic in particular is quite possibly the most robust package manager in existence. But at the end of the day, I like my Mandriva better.

xuvio38, hey, meant no disrespect to your post by including a screen of my Windows 7. Shouldn't have sent it. If someone could zap it, thanks. I've been a fan of Linux for years, back to at least 1998. Tried it many times, Redhat, Mandrake/Mandriva, SuSE/Open, Ubuntu, etc. All good. I'm sure I'll wander back to Linux again soon. Probably very soon.

You haven't done anything wrong, in fact your original post adds to the thread.. Thank you!

Redhat, eh? I heard NASA uses that... which is pretty stellar if you ask me. Anyways, back to your Windows 7. I'm sure you've heard the complaints of how Microsoft "stole" the look of the newest KDE update. (KDE 4.2 that is..) Here's a screencap of the newest KDE: http://tuxyking.googlepages.com/Acer1-OS11-KDE4.jpeg

Note that the link above is not my own screencap, I've never used KDE other than it's primative stages in Kubuntu for about 10 minutes. I honestly do not think Microsoft "stole" from KDE, they do look similar if you make the task bar in KDE transparent, but still... they look different and I'm sure they feel completely different too. What is your stance on this?

(O.o)p Sure if by ruining you mean fixing and by aspects you mean problems with. I believe that Synaptic is probably one of the leading causes for windows users to switch. The hardcore assets are still in place for the hardcore users, but user friendly wins over complication, at least when it comes to finally gaining some ground on market share.

I think my brain is failing but I could have sworn I posted mine in this thread just days ago. Well here it is again.

edit: One more thing. By the way, nice desktop back there with the titties, way to place the windows strategically. ;)

edit2: Come to think of it, I'm certain I actually made an attempt to post it, at least. In that one I remembered to tell you it was gtk theme dust with font of Bitstream Vera.

edit3: Sorry about all this, but looking at the screen cap I took just for this reason, I noticed I was actually in the act of making that reply by the tab in Firefox. How did I screw that up? heh

blahblah454 03-18-2009 04:29 PM

Well I am not using linux (sorry guys!), but here is a cap of my XP desktop.
I like icons on my desktop and I use most of them, they are arranged into groups according to what they are (the stuff on the far left is just things I save there that need to be sorted, so its constantly changing, but everything else stays pretty much the same)

Dual monitors too!! 24" and a 19". I took that picture myself using a toy, a calender, and a red lamp (and a camera...)

Gentoo Linux with KDE 4.2

http://bayimg.com/image/paogjaabg.jpg

I like my desktop clean

Herk 03-20-2009 05:13 AM

I like clean desktops too. That KDE desktop looks great. KDE has always seemed ugly to me, but that looks good.

connyosis 03-20-2009 05:16 AM

KDE 4 can be made to look awesome if you want to tinker with it. It still looks pretty good from the beginning unlike some 3.x releases.

fiatguy85 03-23-2009 10:08 PM

How about ArchLinux with Openbox :) I'm a loser I know.

I used to use Ubuntu but now that I've started with Arch, I'll probably never go back. Arch is based on simplicity and speed, but it is mainly intended for advanced users. It's highly configurable to suit personal taste.

This is my laptop setup:

2 instances of conky (notes on the bottom left and computer stats, weather, time, email, calender on the right). Terminal embedded on the desktop in the top left with a script someone wrote to list setup info and display the old arch logo. Pypanel toolbar in the top with Sonata minimized in the tray (connects to the desktop computer where mpd runs).

If anyone is interested, I'll share openbox, pypanel, or conky configs and scripts or any other info on Arch or my setup. My desktop computer is very similar with dual monitors.

Sorry about the large format (so you can see the details):

...

Openbox is nice. I run it on my laptop since with 512 MB ram Gnome or KDE tends to be a little sluggish.

Do you know if it is a live cd, or just an installer disk?

Thanks for all of the responces, and Linux enthusiasm!

It is just an installer disc. When you install Arch all you have is a working system and that's it (just a command prompt). You have to go and install whatever you want from there, such as the desktop environment, etc. One benefit is the core system is extremely small and lightweight so it is easy to keep it that way. It also uses BSD style sysinit which simplifies configuration of startup services. There are a few things such as that and netcfg for configuring networks that I think are wonderful tools. The best feature of all is probably the package management system. You can install many programs from the repositories, even more from the user repositories, and if you still need to build a program, you can write a simple PKGBUILD file to build and install it as a package. I believe it is the easiest distro to build your own packages in . You do have to be really comfortable with command line to even install it, though. And here is the FAQ.

Openbox can be installed on a lot of distros to get a similar desktop. It's lightweight and uses a couple of xml files for configuration. Openbox can also be used in conjunction with Gnome or KDE. Conky can be run in any Desktop environment as far as I know and a terminal can be put on the desktop of Gnome with Devilspie.

Here is my 'G-rated' desktop. It is pretty plain, but it works. And it works quite well.

I also have a 37" monitor, so the 1920x1080 resolution is great.

Here's a new capture of Windows 7. Old one was Win 7 Build 7057 32 bit, one monitor. New is Build 7068 64 bit, dual monitors. Tried to keep it clean...

biznatch 04-03-2009 03:34 PM

Wouldn't it be great if those wallpapers came with the new Windows 7?

Wyodiver33 04-03-2009 05:02 PM

biznatch, yes, it would be nice if MS included wallpaper like that. But until they do, the Titty Board works just fine!

ASU2003 04-03-2009 05:13 PM

My normal summer desktop picture is 12 naked Abby Winters girls standing around a pool. :) But I didn't think it should get posted here.

I have uTorrent, Pidgin, Firefox, and Picasa on my linux computer too, but what is that Ad-aware program?

Wyodiver33 04-03-2009 05:47 PM

ASU2003, Ad-Aware is a great scan app. Looks for malware, spyware, etc. I use it all the time, along with Spybot. Send me that Abby Winters pic!

nikkiana 04-03-2009 06:07 PM

Mine's just a boring generic Ubuntu desktop... I was too lazy to find better backgrounds and make it more pretty.

It was a bad attempt at a joke. Linux users dont have a need for Ad-Aware currently.

Wyodiver33 04-11-2009 06:14 AM

Well, aren't I an idiot? I actually do know better, I've used Linux on and off for years. I was obviously thinking inside of the Windows box! Bad habit, for sure.

MikeSty 04-11-2009 04:15 PM

Damn, I didn't know Linux could look so sexy. I'm so tempted to install something ... but not enough time. Maybe this summer? Doubt it :-p Everyone I've known that's done tech stuff at some point all says "Man I'd just love to tinker with Linux or Ubuntu!", and they try it for a while and end up giving up on it. I've done similar things - I did at least manage to build a computer with ancient parts and give it a whirl, and I was impressed and have always wanted to see just how good it was on a PC that wasn't so horrible.

I'm doing more and more work in Excel every day and the last I heard, Open Office just wasn't up to snuff. But maybe, just maybe, I'll actually give Linux a long test drive, not just some whim.

Keep posting guys. I'd post my XP background but it's just black with no icons. I like it that way ;) I use the black XP Royale Noir theme. At the top I have a hidden Winamp bar. It's kinda cool....

I have an app called "Paranoia" made by a guy named ZOverLord that hides my desktop icons and shows them when I press certain keys. I can't find it anymore, but 'tis great!

Strange, your working toward breaking me right??? Well, you know what, IT ISN'T WORKING.

I won't bite. No. Just NO!!!!
