Any Google Earth experts out there?

Does anyone know how to embed a Google Earth placemark on a web site?

When I upload the .kmz file to my site, I find that clicking on the link makes my browser (IE) treat it like a zip file - it makes me click to open (or save) the file; then another click for the "use evaluation version" in WinZip, then double click on the doc.kml file to finally open Google Earth and zoom to the location.

So . . . it works, but I'd like it to work in one click - not 3 clicks and a dbl-click. No one will go thru that much trouble - and that's too long of an explanatin.

Anyone know how to shorten the process? I know if you just send an email with the .kmz file, it opens in one click. Why doesn't it work the same online? It's still a .kmz file.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

.

Fix your mime types. That might do it. If you don't know the method offhand, google it. It's too much to type for me right now, but I still wanted to push in what is hopefully the right direction before I went to bed.

Well, thanks for the info, luciferase75.

From my research, I've found (I think) that I needed to create a .htaccess file with the following:

AddType application/vnd.google-earth.kmz .kmz

I've created the file using Notepad, and uploaded the file to my ftp site. No difference.
I know my site is Linux hosted. I don't know if it's Apache (It's a shared host by Go Daddy).

Just in case it is Apache, I also created the file http.conf and added the following lines:

AddType application/vnd.google-earth.kml+xml .kml
AddType application/vnd.google-earth.kmz .kmz

Still no difference

EDIT LATER:

There seemed to be a bit of lag time, but it seems to work now - thanks for getting me on the right track, luciferase75.

Maybe you could post your site so we could test. Also, I could be wrong, but I thought mime types were only good if you wanted to display the item in your browser instead of opening it. Its up to your windows file associations to open up a file directly in Google Earth. After you save it, Shift+Right Click to Open With... select Google Earth. Then the next time you open it in your web browser, check off always open with this program. Also, you should check the options in the Google Earth program, because I thought it was supposed to handle these associations. Also, you might try IZArc instead of WinZip.

That would be the most logical action, but it's a resume/portfolio - I put it online because I just got laid off last month, and since it's got my name, address, etc., all over the place, I'd prefer to keep a little anonymity. Even just typing the URL doesn't work (the index page just has pics of my dogs!) - the only way in is by clicking on an emailed link, and I only email the link to prospective employers. Thanks for the offer, though.

Actually, I'm confident it works now - I've only been told by one person that it still doesn't work for her. Quite a few other people say it works for them, and I tried it from my spare computer, and it works just fine for me now with both IE and Firefox.

I'm glad you got it all fixed now but I just have to ask why would prospective employers need to google earth you before they even hire you?

"the only way in...." - I wouldn't rely too heavily on that

Yeah - I know people can get in if they really wanted to. There are no national secrets or anything on the site. As a matter of fact, there are already Google links to a few of the pages (strangely - pdf files, though)

The GE placemarks are to a couple projects I've worked on, not to my house.
There's a bit of a "wow" factor if it works correctly. But those alone aren't going to get me a job - but could cost me one if the links didn't work - everything has to perfect on a resume, especially in this economy. That's why I asked for help.
