I got my new MacBook Pro!

And with just the right angle and brightness, I can watch the TV behind me while I work!

lol

But in all seriousness, it is a gorgeous machine, I opted for the 15.4 default config with applecare.

I figured I would come and stop at TFP again, for old times sake.

I put Linux and Vista on it a few hours after I had it.

Using Vista had some issues, I bought a Bluetooth mouse, but only because Vista is for gaming, and I'd rather not game with an erratic multitouch pad (apple didn't get the drivers quite right for vista and this trackpad.)

Linux I'm running in virtualization, because I only need it for a few things, and I use a lower runlevel, staying out of Xwindow. I could easily run a graphical in the virtual env, but I prefer command line.

Hope all is well still here at the TFP. Thanks for reading my thread!

You know that there's FreeBSD hiding there, under OS X? I use the bash shell all the time, right on my Mac, without running any linux at all. In fact, I've got a terminal window opened SSH'ed into a client's server right now. You can find the "terminal" application under Applications/Utilities.

Also, google "Quicksilver". Best Mac application launcher (possibly among the best Mac applications!) out there. You could turn off your Dock for good, if you got hot with Quicksilver.

Yes, and I do use the terminal for a lot of things, but right now I'm doing some apt testing and I need a small debian install, easiest way to create all of the situations I needed to test.

At work I'll often ssh into a machine while a user is logged in just to do some work in the background. I don't have to interrupt the user, and in some situations, I'll close programs or deliver commands to discourage the behavior (I work in a public school, enough said ) and it usually results in the student returning to work.

I'm running the virtualization in OSX, and I do most of my computing in OSX, but for CS:S or the upcoming GTA4:PC, I wanted Vista around. I just wanna run Crysis already and see how it looks, oh well, next paycheck.

Congrats! Did you get the brand spanking new one, that has style cues from the iMac?

Yes I sure did, and boy is this glass screen reflective! It's not too annoying, sometimes it even lets me know someone is snooping over the shoulder!

I do like the chiclet keyboard and the backlighting, both for the display and the keys. Very very slick. My best digital cam is on the fritz, but I can give up some blurry cell phone shots!

I couldn't agree more, they're very slick. I'm even considering breaking my "wait until my current computer breaks down" rule to pick up the 15" MacBook (w/ the 2.8GHz processor).

So what are you planning on using it for primarily? Kinda everything?

Just my .02, but I HATE the macbook style keyboard that had infultrated all the macs. I love having the keys all close together, and aluminumy.

+1 on this. They also took firewire out of the MacBook and MacBook Pro. WTF, Apple?

I'm not a fan of the new line of laptops, so I'll probably switch over to an iMac when I have the funds to upgrade my computer. Right now I have a late 2006 MBP.

You know, I thought I would too, but when I tried my brother's Air, I found I quite liked it. I wouldn't write it off until you've actually laid hands on one.

I've messed with the Air and don't like it much. I also don't like the change in color scheme for the MBP - I liked how it was differentiated from the MacBooks. Oh well, not anymore.

Hopefully they'll realize they screwed up and change something in the next generation, kind of like they did with the Nano. The 3rd generation was just.. wrong. Especially for athletic activity.

Well, I had to use the keyboards that come with iMacs, the thin wafer ones, when I was working at the Apple Store, and I never got used to it. I mean, I understand that it's supposed to be easier to clean or whatever, but I really hate the spaces in between the keys.

Are you sure? From Apple's webpage:

There is FW in the MBP, not in the MB. A lot of people are choked about that, as well as the glossy only screens in the MBP. Not a terribly impressive offering when some people were expecting something bold like a netbook when the market is moving towards lower end value systems. Instead prices went up for marginal performance increase..
