Fixed Wireless
Im out in the middle of the boonies. I want, no fuck that, i NEED something faster than dial-up.
since satellite is a bit on the expensive side, someone recommended something called Fixed Wireless. Does anyone have any experience with this method of connecting to the information superhighway? ANY knowledge or help with this matter would be appreciated, seeing as how i basically know nothing about it. all i really know its its pretty much what cell phones use, only in a fixed location, hence the name. |
Is this on a laptop or desktop..?
If this fixed wireless is the same as cell phone, you could just try a laptop connect card...I'd go for the cheapest option, because you're not going to get decent broadband speeds from any service, satellite or other, if you are in the sticks... I was in the sticks for the longest, did the satellite thing and hated it, but it was better than dial up...I imagine that they could have improved the service since then, so in essence, you could pay $70 for wi-fi or a laptop connect card, and get better results on satellite for a little more cash... OR If you have cell with a data plan that gets good service in your area, tether it to whatever you have and get net that way... |
What you're talking about is generally known as WiMAX. It's a last-mile wireless service wher a technician comes out to your home and installs a receiver that connects you to the network. Availability is still highly sketchy, though, so you'll need to check with your service provider to find out if it's offered in your area.
